I've been friends with this guy for three years and he moved states a year ago. He had a girlfriend when we started hanging out and i stupidly feel for him. She broke up with him last year but our friendship has always been blurry. i get nervous around him and all my friends say he gets that way too. Now he's told me he's coming to town but i don't think we should see each other; ever! we have nicknames for each other and make each other laugh as well as confide in each other on almost everything but i can't help but feel that there is tension or something that we are avoiding to talk about, especially him. i'm confused and am not willing to get my heart broken as i fear tha he is the only person who knows me well enough to hurt me and he does sometimes. how do put distance between us without letting him know why.

Wow, OK. Well, if you don't want to see him - fine. Tell him you have something on that weekend he is in town. But by the sound of it, you both have feelings for each other that you both need to resolve. I would suggest you see him, and tell him you have to talk. Tell him how you feel, and that you have a suspicion he feels the same way. What have you got to loose? If you do both feel the same way, take it from there. The best relationships / marriages start off as friendships. My b/f is my best friend, and yes, he could hurt me if he wanted, he has all the amo he needs. But that is life! You have to take chances. He is the most wonderful person I know, and I trust he feels the same about me. Remember, when you are old and grey, to have a friend is more important than having a lover!
