Having friends over for dinner. What should we talk about beside our personal lives?

The holiday season gives us all some common interests:
Gifts, shopping -- wishes, hard people to shop for, flops, ideas
Holiday memories -- good and bad; future
Vacation spots -- past, present, future, dream, disaster
Food -- restaurants, likes / dislikes, cooking triumphs & disasters
Entertainment -- events coming up, been to
You can write these topic titles on cards and flip them over or even pass them out. You can even make games out of them: You say a topic and people go around the table giving one answer and someone can't. Then they pick the next topic, or discuss on of the answers. Always go to the next thing before the last one is totally dead. Leave 'em wanting more.

Anything! The conversation doesn't need to be forced, if you are comfortable with eachother, a topic will arise eventually. When I go to my friends' houses for dinner, or vice versa, we'll talk about the food, techniques of how to make it, how school is, familiy is, etc. =) Have fun!

I like to look at what Lincoln said. "Below average minds talk about people, average minds talk about events, excellent minds talk about ideas." So talk about ideas. Ideas that make all people who are engaged in life, become engaged in the conversation. Let them be political, let them bring up the level of debate. Talk about ideas and see from where your guest arrive.

Frankly, you should talk about the dishes that are being served. That dinner would be tastier.

Anything, anything at all. Just say the very first thing that comes to mind. Be it antelope or your favorite thing to eat at McDonalds. Just bring up whatever you want.
I usually tell people I'm a unicorn.
