It is actually there in the Bible, astoundingly enough - Matthew 4:7. It's that bit where Jesus is in the desert for forty days, and is having a chat with Satan, who tells him to conjure up some tea and scones, since he's hungry.
"Jesus said to him, ‘Again it is written, “Do not put the Lord your God to the test."'"
So I guess the question is why it's there. I think the good answer (and so many people will hate this) is that trying to do that is bound to end up with you concluding that God's not listening, or doesn't care, or exist, or something, and that's a sort of mal-rational approach to faith. Whatever test you set, you're likely to confirm whatever you originally thought, and there's little gained in the exercise in terms of your own spirituality or world peace.
The bad answer is that it's just inconsistent to teach that God is perfect and everywhere and watching you and beneficient and yet unable to attend to your request, so the rule *has* to be in there somewhere. Arguing that way, you end up concluding that (s)he is a cranky old thing who doesn't care about suffering, and probably has a dress code for getting into Heaven.

Well that's a good Q and comment, Ya why we shouldn't test GOD???
This is what I found among most of the Christians in this forum, most of there answers" Jesus will save you????for what he will save me ? for doing nothing or the breast will forgive you??? or it is mentioned in Bible???
So, before we refer to something we have to use our brains and Intelligence and search the whole universe for the truth, for the right religion.
So, thumbs up for your Q and comment and I wish those in the forum try to discuss the query things and not try .........each others.
And I think this why western world has many Atheists.

It means, even though you believe God will protect you from harm, you must not "test" that belief by doing something reckless, like jumping off of a cliff. Otherwise, test all you want.

I believe that means don't "dare" God.
The only time that I know of where God invites us to actually test Him is involving tithes and offerings. He tells us to give the first and best of our income to Him, and He will allow blessings in our lives that we won't be able to even measure, they will be so many.

The bible is full of paradox and contradiction:
"An eye for an eye" and also
"Turn the other cheek" etc...
Your well thought out question is just further proof of this.
Thank-you for asking it, i look forward to reading the answers.

If you don't test your beliefs you cannot honestly say that your beliefs aren't superstitions.
If your beliefs constantly disagree with scientific facts it is but a superstition...
Test what ever you believe in, and prove it to yourself.

I think it means that you should not do stupid things to yourself or others, expecting God to bail you out. God does not always react the way you expect Him to, so testing him in this way would be dumb. Don't u think?

I didn't read the whole thing. Too intimidating:) When it says don't test god it means not to mess around with other gods, and things like that as he will leave you basically. www. FamilyRadio.com (click on my name).
