I have worked for my company for a year and a half at present & my baby is due on June 24th 2007. As far as I am aware I am entitled to 6 months paid maternity leave & 6 months unpaid maternity leave is I wish. However, my father called round to see me on the weekend & informed that the law has very recently changed & that I will now be entitled to 9 months paid maternity leave. Can anyone tell me if this is correct? And if it is where can I find information regarding this new law?

i know u r not from the united states because over here, u r not guaranteed payment. u r just guaranteed your job for 12 weeks of unpaid leave and this is only if u work for a company with 50 or more people. your checks will probably come from your sick pay/vacation/holiday or short term disability.

i wish i was from where u r from!

Your father was definately correct. The law is changing from the first of April next year. New rights to maternity leave and pay apply if your baby is due on or after 1 April 2007, it doesn’t matter when your baby is actually born. If your baby is due in June then the changes apply and you will get 9 months maternity leave. Here are some websites.

If all men and women are supposed to have equal rights, then all personnel, pregnant or not, male or female, are entitled to equal privileges. At the moment, only pregnant women get an extended leave with a right to return to work. Some companies in some countries provide generous income support while the women is at home waiting for birth and later caring for the child. Some companies allow fathers to take some time off to look after children. The only ones left out in the cold are people without children. Having a child is a personal decision, much like having a pet. It is a lifestyle choice, yet those who make that choice are placed on a pedestal and given far more consideration And financial benefits than those who for reasons of their own remain childless. In fact they are penalized for being socially responsible adults. That is definitely discrimination. Having a baby benefits noone other than the one having it. In fact, to the rest of society, it is an added burden. (there are already over 6 billion homo sapiens on this planet. There is no shortage. )It is an extra mouth to feed and a source of added pollution. The human species is already crowding out other species. Therefore, if women are given a leave (paid or otherwise) to produce a baby, then others should have the right to an extended leave as well, to pursue their intersts. We need people with a social conscience to undo the damage caused by socially irresponsible people.

If you are in the U.S., as far as I know, there is no law saying that you have to be paid while on maternity leave. However, there is a law (FMLA. Family Medical Leave Act), that guarantees that you will have a job when you come back to work. I'm sure the amount of time varies from one state to another.
Also, if you have insurance at your work, check into the disability you might have. When I took my maternity leave this year, my insurance paid me for 20 hours of work, a week, for the first 6 weeks that I was out. As long as my Dr said I needed to stay out of work, they would pay my for 20 hours a week. Check into it!

there are rumours going around that maternity pay is changing for baby's born after 1st april 2007. this is that you will get 9 months paid instead of just 6 months maternity pay. although at the moment it still stands at 6 months paid, 6 months unpaid, check with your employer for latest maternity pay updates!

Your dad's right! under the Work and Families Act 2006, because your baby is due after 1 April 2007, you will be entitled to 39 weeks (about 9 months) ordinary maternity leave (i.e. the paid kind). Under the statutory scheme the first 6 weeks is paid at 90% of salary and the rest at Statutory Maternity pay rate (about £110 per week). Check your contract though in case your employer is offering more.

by law you are required to get maternity leave at least 12 weeks and be able to come back to work in the same position that you left however unfortunately it is not required to be PAID maternity leave!!! Some bosses will pay you but only if they are kind...

I don't know where you work. The law does not require anyone to have paid maternity leave in the US.

I have just asked our PAYE department at work (The ones who do the wages and pay slips) it is going to increase but hasnt yet!

You should speak to your boss and find out the date that it increases and hopefully you will get more.

I have only just come back after my maternity and i got 6 months!

In Ontario you would be entitled to one year of paid leave. Where are you?
