I guess Rembrandt was weak then, and empty, and narrow-minded.
I'm not angry or unhappy, and I don't use God as a crutch, although I know He helps me when I need it.
My beliefs in God, Jesus and the Bible are not totally based on the Bible, but on other historical writings (Pliny the Elder, Pliny the Younger, Josephus, et cetera), and scientific evidence.
You're generalizing, based on your own experiences.
A few years ago, I would have agreed with you, based on my own experiences with hypocrisy in the church, and doubt in God's existence.
Now I know that before I experienced those doubts, I was NOT a Christian that whole time. I became a "Christian" when I was seven, but I was not actually a Christian. NOW I am. The difference is that it's not hard for me to not do certain things. I just don't. I'm not even tempted.
Before, I really struggled with not doing things. I put on a good show of being a Christian.
Now, that's just me. It may not be you. But to be perfectly honest, I REALLY thought I was a Christian before. Now I see I wasn't.

Apparently you haven't read the Bible. Some if not all the men and women in it are very strong. It takes a strong person to follow the teachings of the Bible and stand up under persecution.
It looks like you are very narrow minded from your statement. Where do you live, in a big city? Get out more and meet people, you will see there aren't as many as you think unhappy.

>>>Religion does not seem to serve any other purpose but to give old-fashioned, empty, narrow-minded people some kind of meaning.>>>
No, its purpose is to, ultimately, lead us to God and help us get into Heaven after we die.
>>>Religion is supposed to be based on love but, how many Christians, Catholics, etc... are angry, unhappy, etc...MANY. >>>
Don't you think that there are a lot of atheists who are also unhappy?
And are you not willing to concede that not all Christians (by the way, we Catholics are Christians too) fit your "unhappy" stereotype?
>>>They're also weak because they need something to use as a crutch to keep going.>>>
We're not weak. We don't need "proof" (something that atheists always demand) that God exists. We are strong enough to put faith in Him, even without the atheists' idea of "proof."
Only weak people need "proof" that God is real. They're not strong enough to believe, nor courageous enough.
>>>I know I was.<<<
Again, the purpose of a given religion is to help people get to Heaven after we die. You can try to do this without religion's help, of course, but you're on your own.
Without religion, there's nothing for you to refer to, to make sure that you're on the right track as far as getting to Heaven after you die. Getting into Heaven on your own, without the guidance of religion, is a pretty tall order.

On the contrary. Who is weaker; who attends to all their desires and fulfil them no matter what religion says about that or those who keep chaste because religion tells them to? Who is weaker; those who steal to get more money or those who endure poverty and remain honest for religious reasons?
Religion does not turn you into a machine that experiencdes no emotions of happiness, sadness, anger, etc. However, it teaches you how to express and manage such emotions and why to feel them in the first place. Prophet Muhammad cried when his son died just like any father; however, religion made him accept Allah's destiny contentedly.
People nowadays get angry and hate each other over trivial reasons because we are becoming more and more materialistic and attached to life when we really shouldn't. So, you see being away from religion is what is making us the way you are.
Peace

Perhaps. The idea of a nice finite universe and a comfortable chair in Heaven once you're dead is something comforting to someone who's afraid of dying (or living). But I don't think that's a problem. It's a problem that there are Christians about who are insane, and are happy to go about telling everyone that God told them to do such and such - as if that makes it right.
Faith as a substitute for thinking is definitely bad, and the Church as an organisation very rarely does anything to stop that.

...If you have ceased "being religious", what is your crutch? How do you cope or make it through? Anything sure in your life, anything you can count on? Who/what do you lean on in hard times? Another person? Alcohol? Drugs? Promiscuous lifestyle?
...The best of us are flawed and have feet of clay.
...You could be right; I wouldn't recommend being "religious" at all - in fact, I gave up religion about 27 years ago.
...Then I met Jesus Christ - He changed my life, He gave me new life, He forgave my sins, and gave me eternal life - a home in Heaven for sure.
...Narrow-minded? Yes, I admit it - but one quality of truth is narrowness. For example, if your car has a reminder that says "USE UNLEADED FUEL ONLY", it is not narrow-minded to do this - it is correct, because that is how the machine was designed. And God has designed us and knows what we need.
...Maybe you'd call Christianity a crutch? Well, I don't - I prefer to think of Christianity as a full life-support system, since it is chock full of God's principles and commands for living, and they work - I don't know of anything else that does. The Christian's retirement benefits are out of this world.
...Am I weak? You bet I am - but God shows Himself strong in my weakness - see
2 Corinthians 11:
...7 Because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, for this reason, to keep me from exalting myself, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me--to keep me from exalting myself!
...8 Concerning this I implored the Lord three times that it might leave me.
...9 And He has said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness " Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.
...10 Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ's sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.
...Another thing - God says all things work together for my good, if I love (obey) Him and I am one of His -
...Now, where is there a better deal than what I have just described?
...I urge all readers to "believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved" - Acts 16:31
...Whosoever will, may come.

Religion alone is for people who like to do little rituals over and over again to make themselves feel better and that they are earning some sort of cosmic browine points and if they scale tips in their favor, wow they made it to heaven! NOT eph 2:-10! lol. It's more than religion.

Religion is for the weak, the poor and the suffering people...to become strong, rich and happy. If they don't change, those religions or their acceptance of religions are really useless.

Humans are the only being with a choice to worship god or not worship God,No not one other thing has a choice. The angels do not have a choice. There is no other reason for our existent, but to worship god.
