A friend has been on and off drugs since he was 13 now 27 he's just gone off the rails again. Parents have now given up. Is there hope for him. Has anyone really beaten the addiction. He's done everything heroin, pills. Now we hear he's had Ice. Is there hope or should we all wipe our hands off him. His parents say he's severly depressed . I think that was caused by all the dope he smoked. Anyone got advice on how to handle this.

He's been on methodone, been to rehab parents have done everything they could. This kid was given the world was brainy etc I agree there has to have been a reason for him to go on drugs in the first place. It just seems so terrible that he was doing so well and now he's back on the stuff. Thanks to the serious posters as it is a genuine question.

As long as he is alive there is hope, however minute that may be.
The only known cure for addictions is consequences, do not try to stop them, let the addict face the music.
One of the consequences is loss of family and friends, it is horrible to watch someone go through addiction, heart wrenching, as is the same with MANY illnesses. You can be supportive and loving from a distance if that is what you choose.
Treatment helps, but often treatment needs to be repeated over and over again. Which is a tremendous drain on resources but worth the effort.
There are many, many people who have sucessfully dealt with addictions. Ask any one of them how they did it and you will most likely get MANY different answers.
I used 7 rehabs (that I remember) and a 12 step group.
I wish you luck.
Peace.

Yes, people who have been addicted can and do recover. The problem is, it has to come from within the person themselves. No one can help or cure them unless they truly want to get better, and that often comes when they experience great losses due to their using. Your friends parents are on the right track. Distancing themselves from the user is often the start of realizing how much drug use has cost them. When the people closest to the addict refuse to be manipulated, used, abused, or give sympathy, the cost of drug use often become apparent. Tough Love works! It isn't called Tough Love because it's tough on the addict. It's called tough because letting them go until they realize the cost is often very difficult for the people who love them. Best thing you can do is tell the person that you'd rather not be involved with them while they use. When they've begun to seek treatment and have stayed drug-free for over six months, throw them a party.... without booze or drugs! Remember, even alcohol is a drug. If they are following a program and you see them drinking alcohol or smoking pot, they are not sticking with their program and will eventually go back to using.

I am sorry to hear about your friend. I was once too addicted to meth. That drug will take everything a person believes in and throw it out the door. The only reason I was able to get off of the stuff was because I became pregnant. I thank god that it happened that way because there is no way I could have stayed off of the stuff any other way. My sister on the other hand is addicted and she is even pregnant. I tried everything to get her off of the drugs. I finally just gave up. I stressed my self enough. No One will change if they dont want too. I sympathize with what your going with. GodBless you and your friend.

First and foremost, he has to be ready for help and alot of times that means hitting bottom .... sounds like he may already be there. Look up methadone clinics in your area...they provide help to those who are addicted to heroin, pills, etc. You said he tried methadone, but it takes having someone on your side to make sure he gets there everyday. It is worth trying again. Tell him you will be there for him and help him through it. He needs to know that someone is still willing to try and save him.Methadone helps them to be able to get off the harmful drugs without experiencing withdrawals, which is why most people go back to drugs after they try to quit. The withdrawals can make you feel like you are dying, nausea, vomiting, diarreah, hot/cold sweats, anxiety, anger, etc. He will have to commit to going to the clinic everyday as they give you a one day dose at a time. They also provide counseling and do drug tests to see if the addict is using again. It is completely confidential and it may save his life and your relationship with him. Don't give up on him...there is help out there. Good Luck.

No wonder the kid can't kick drugs the parents gave up, parents should never ever give up! They need to keep on helping! This poor soul needs support and help from as much family, friends and programs possible. He will either get better or die. Yes drugs cause emotional problems such as depression, etc. They really can't tell if it is from the drugs or if it is him until he is clean and then they can accurately test him.

yes. there is hope, why don't his parents have him checked out re. his depression, perhaps he has
bi-polar ( causes people to be up & then upset & down)
or he may have some other reason for the depression,
maybe something from his past that he has never talked
about. I think it would be good if he saw a phychiatrist, if he's willing to do so.
As far as his stopping the drug use, he's got to want to
stop on his own , I think if he found the underlying cause
of his depression & how to properly fix it then he might be more willing to stop using the other drugs that he is now
doing.
good luck this is never easy

The cure rate for addicts like this is less than 2%, nearer 0. Get him on methadone if there is a clinic nearby.

no I'd say not really. not unless he truly wants to make a change in hiw life which he doesn't it sounds like, and I wouldn't say he is depressed from the drugs, he was depressed about something a long time ago when he first started doing them, sorry about the grim outlook on things

druggies rarely change and keep off drugs. The only thing i guess is just move out in the middle of nowhere, or seek lots of counseling. There's treatment too. he really needs your support though, dont give up on him.
