i have a kitten and she does the same thing! The number of times that she has made me jump out of my skin by suddenly appearing next to me!!! i suppose cats need to get used to the surroundings.

It's just your cat's way of feeling like it's in charge. My cat doesn't do exactly that but it does other little "catty" stuff to display the same conclusion. Cat's can be such brats sometimes, but I wouldn't trade them for the anything.

Cats don't like to be told what to do and only want to be pick up if they ask you to do so.

My cat will ask me if he can jump on my knees.
Sometimes, he cannot jump because of a sore leg or foot and he will ask me to pick him up to be put on my knees.

But if I pick him up out of the blue to put on my knees, he'll jump off. If he sees I am trying to catch him, he'll run off.
He won't sleep in his bed if I put him in there.
It has to be his decision.
Cats don't have a boss.
They are your boss. You have to do what they want you to do.
If you don't, they spend most of their time outside and become semi-feral.
