It is probably because the English word God was the source of the English word Good, and the English word Devil was the source of the English word Evil. But yes, it is an interesting play on the words. Always been one of my favorites.

The words Satan, the Devil and Lucifer are supposed to be one and the same in meaning, but in fact, they have changed meaning many times through religious history.
The concept of "the Devil" is very much a medieval creation of the catholic church.
The word 'Lucifer' refers to "the bringer of light" and knowledge, which no self-respecting religion could ever allow.
