Yes. The prevent pass mistakes. The problem is that most history class is just a propaganda tool for what makes a country great. I've only remember only three mistakes discussed in American history and they were only glanced over. Slavery, the treatment of Native Americans, and the stealing of Mexican/Spanish land. The only practical purpose for history taught in schools, seems to be a demonstration to higher learning that you can jump through hoops. Memorizing dates and who invented what is pointless. My suggestion is to learn history on your own terms, then you can see all the mistakes people make. Learning history from school just turns you into a robot.

Yes, because there's nothing new under the son. So you learn from history and how people will react.
The trouble with history as a subject is that it is all dates. Think of it as people with a story to tell.
When we understand hsitory, we understand the world around us today.

Yes. History gives us a great insight into why the world is in it's current state. It teaches us valuable lessons on who we are and where we came from. If it wasn't for history we might be friends with the french, forgetting our previous conflicts with them!

As with any subject, there are multiple facets to history and ways to approach it. When I was a kid it was names, dates, events ... just a big barrel of plots and miscellaneous factoids. It was lame. Now that I am older, I appreciate the people of history more. How they behaved, what they said in given situations, how they treated others, and obsticals that they overcame, what their families were like. I draw parallels between them and my family, friends, and myself. I try to identify the personality types of historical figures and ponder what they accomplished during their lifetime.

I also agree with the "Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it" argument. Unfortunately in school you are tought alot of dull boring history and you have to write essays about it! Personally I dropped history as soon as possible but am still interested in it!

in the future when you come to job aplications, university applications etc a lot of employers will look for history qualifications. it shows you are willing to learn about a lot more about a lot of things. Remember most companies will be proud of their history...
And also remember knowledge is power!

Of course, how can you live in the present and progress to the future without knowing where you have come from and the mistakes of the past. How would we grow as human beings and not continually make the same mistakes!

I think it's the most interesting subject apart from literature. It helps with understanding human nature and the way countries are shaped. It opens your mind, giving you knowledge for debate and makes an interesting person. That said it may not be practically useful for many voactions.
