I got mine at a health food store. The ones I got are unsweetened and look like cedar shavings except they are white. This would be different from the shredded coconut sold at most stores.
I have also seen shredded coconut in Indian/Pakistani grocers, along with coconut powder. I would imagine it would be available in Thai or Asian markets as well.
Good luck! I hope you find yours without too much trouble, but worse to worse, you could always buy online.

Most coconut flakes are on the baking aisle in the grocery store...the same aisle with the choc chips and cake mixes. There are some though, that are kept in frozen food where the dessert or fruits are.

Any large Supermarket make a Vanilla cake with frosting then sprinkle some coconut flakes over it . Just like my Ma used to make it..

Most big supermarkets carry coconut flakes,milk and cream for curries, baking,etc.!!!

Walmart only sells sweetened. i won't be able to make coconut butter out of that. i've got tried! lol! in case you have an entire ingredients shop interior sight(Dothan,Al would not >_<) attempt that! or Publix! they have each little thing! howdy, why have not i attempted Publix? :)

In that shop that's been using this site for free market research for the last few weeks - Sainsburys.
Try mentioning yahoo - they might give you a discount !
