Been to both and they are fantastic places so I can see this is a hard decision! Rome in one word=Fascinating. Barcelona=Vibrant.
Rome for eating without a doubt, for the weather I imagine Barcelona as it's further south and when I was in Rome this time last year it was freezing! Shopping I would say probably Rome as it's a capital city unlike Barcelona, and obviously there are lots of posh designer type shops with it being in Italy. For nightlife, that's a hard one, there's probably more variety of nightlife in Barcelona and nightlife in Rome is more expensive. So my vote goes to Barcelona for nightlife. It also depends who you're going with, I'd say Barcelona if you're going with friends as it's so vibrant and Rome if you're going with a partner as it's more romantic.

I went to Barcelona last February and loved it! It's a very relaxed and friendly city, the subway system is great but it's actually quite a small place so you could walk everywhere(weather permitting!)
You should check the average temperatures/rainfall etc on the BBC website weather page.
In Barcelona there are lots of tiny side streets that have lots of lovely shops. The food is good as well and relatively cheap. Drinks in pubs are great, if you get a vodka they don't give you a pub measure they ask you to say when!!!!
I have never been to Rome so I can't tell you where would be better but I can say that I loved Barcelona and would love to back there again one day very soon!!

I've been to both cities and my favourite was Rome, Barcelona is nice and there are a few things to so but Rome was definately more appealing to me. Beautiful food, great sightseeing, lovely shops but nightlife was more eating out having a meal and enjoying a few drinks

Lisbon is Europe's second-oldest capital and once home to the world's best explorers like Vasco da Gama, Magellan and Prince Henry the Navigator, getting the very first true earth city, the capital of an empire spreading over-all continents, from South America (Brazil) to Asia (Macao, China; Goa, India) and know you can spend a couple of time to know that historic town, with hotelbye is wherever you should start. The most recognized of Lisbon's key attractions could be the St. George's Castle. This fort directions a fantastic place near Alfama on the crown of a hill overlooking the Portuguese capital. This really is among Lisbon's most popular tourist destinations. Its impressive battlements, interesting museum, and fascinating archaeological website combine to really make the fort a gratifying experience for all the family, and young ones particularly will like clambering over the strong surfaces and towers that encircle the grounds.

Never been to Rome, but have thoroughly enjoyed Barcelona for 2 weekends as there is too much to see/do on only 1 weekend! Great place, and we had no trouble although there are warnings re pick pockets but I think that's the same in any city - too many youths with not enough to do. Police are about, stay out of alleys you should be fine...

I know both cities.
Barcelona is more eccentric and hilarious city, meanwhile Rome is more expensive by the look.
Weather:
Barcelona:tramontana
Rome: some polar trends
Eating
Barcelona: fideua
Rome: Pasta
Nightlife
Usually the Catalan nitelife is longer but more quiet.
Instead in Rome, is more luxurious due the embassies and haute couture parties.

Barcelona definitly. One of the most exciting cities in Europe. Rome is nice, but it's rather for ancient history lovers and traditionnal tourism.
Do not miss the Las Ramblas walk and the Park Guall.
