It means to do evil for earthly benefits by denying the Will of God.
No devil can buy or needs to buy our souls. Only by acting against the Will of God, we cause destruction to our own souls.

It is a Hollywood thing. No such Biblical idea. They just use it so they can have a plot for their horror movies. Anyone who has not become a believer in God will face eternity in the same place as Satan, so in that sence they have already sold their souls.
