One day in 1986 a maintenance of way worker was walking the tracks in a very small rail yard in Dunsmuir, Ca., when he came across a leather bag, looking very much like the little black bags doctors used to carry when making house calls. On closer inspection, it was seen that it was full of packages of white powder.

He brought the bag and turned it in to a Road Foreman of Engines who had the weekend duty. He in turn contacted the Sheriff's department which sent deputies to investigate. That investigation revealed that the satchel was full of high quality cocaine.

A day later, a woman contacted the agent at Dunsmuir and asked if anyone had turned in a little black bag, and he forwarded the call to the RFE. This woman was told that indeed the bag had been found, but that she had to identify it in person to claim it. So, she back tracked to Dunsmuir.

She was brought into an office, where the bag sat on a table. She positively identified it, not once or twice, but three times she insisted this was her bag.

At that point, the deputies came out of an adjoining room and made the arrest.

So how did the bag get there? This woman was traveling with her boy friend who was a mule for the dope. They were riding AMTRAK when they got into a very serious argument and this woman took the bag and threw it out of the vestibule window. The boy friend made her go back and get it. So, they both received lengthy prison terms.

So, I would answer your question with a qualified "no" when it comes to being OK to throw the ransom from a running train.

depends on what train and where. Many now a days don't have windows or access to a door you can throw it from. It would have to be somewere near a station or restricted speed zone, but Yes it's possible. Is it OK? I imagine the police would help make it OK.

It is risky. If you mis-time your throw the hostage may end up dead.
