One of the best things you can do to help overcome depression is to start helping the underprivileged. You can contact groups like your local American Red Cross, or the Salvation Army. Both are ALWAYS looking for volunteers, and although appreciated, special skills are not necessary. Many people suffering from depression find working with these groups very rewarding because: 1) they find activities that fit your time frame. 2) The work is meaningful and appreciated. 3) The work is rewarding and instills a sense of pride and true accomplishment. 4) It provides a way to meet other people who are concerned, altruistic, and actively want to improve the lives of others. 5) The people that you help acknowledge your efforts positively. 6) It gets out and about in their community. 7) Volunteer work enhances both job and school records. 8) Working with those in need often helps the depressed person put their live in perspective by helping them focus on how fortunate they may actually be when compared to the lives of others.

Hi,
It is now believed that depression is caused by a combination of genetic factors and exposure to a stressful life event. . It is also fairly well established that a change in the activity of certain chemicals in the brain is associated with depression. Clinical depression is seen more in women than in men.
The treatment for depressions is as under
Drug treatment is the most common method of treatment. Antidepressants are prescribed in adequate doses. These generally include oral medication from a group of drugs known as tricyclic antidepressants. These have a calming effect on the patient and also help in reducing sleep problems.
Therapy to improve the patient’s outlook towards events is begun in conjunction with the drug treatment. The person is encouraged to think positively and to shun thoughts of worthlessness, guilt and suicide.
In severe cases, shock treatment (Electro Convulsive therapy) is given. It is mostly resorted to when the patient cannot wait for the drugs to become effective or when she goes into deeper depression and stops reacting completely to situations, a condition known as depressive stupor. A combination of treatment measures is usually helpful in bringing depressive episodes under control.
Pl. do not feel isolated we are with you

its horrible, i know...i feel it often also...i dunno if you're like me or have noticed it, but it comes and goes...if you learn to accept it as something that is a product a chemical imbalance in your brain (lack of serotonin or something or other) that it is a condition which is not a result of anything other than that and has nothing to do with who you are or what kind of person you are, it helps in dealing with depression and finding solutions to solving it. I myself have done nothing else than recognized the fact that the depression is related to some microbiological reaction which i don't fully understand, but just knowing that helps me get over the depressed feelings that i might have and try to focus on the positive aspects about myself. So basically, the imbalance causing me to be depressed sometimes, is also shaping my spiritual being by causing me to suffer, and with suffering comes growth. Being depressed means you are a creative, caring, perceptive, and probably too empathatic. Its like this...if you're always happy, well then you're not a thinking person, and the simplist things make you happy...if you're constantly sad, well then you're probably an ingrate who doesn't realize the blessings you already have...being depressed...being depressed means you're at a low point because you're thinking things through and things aren't adding up to your expectations. but atleast you are thinking about things (life, relationships, etc.) and the fact you recognize you are at a depressed states says you can reach a high state. So ride it out, and you'll be happy again before you know it.

Is it depression over a specific event or events or have you always been that way?
If it is because of a loss of things, the depression seems to last until that one day when someone throws you hope. I have found hope comes in many forms.
If you have always know it, you might want to get some lab work done and see what some of the chemicals in your brain are doing that could be causing it and if so, there are great meds to help you tremendously.
If you can find someone you trust with your life, go through this with them, always have someone have your back so when you fall they can pick you up because someday, you'll be the one helping people through just what you are going through now.
God Bless You

I have a different idea about that. If you can sleep early, getup early, have a morning walk then that may reduce. If cant do that then keep on washing your face with cold water repeatedly, the depression will decrease. For example after 10 or 15 or 20 minutes, 5 times each ~ try it and see the results.

Well, the first thing I would suggest is to get an anti-depressant from your Dr. Like prozac, paxil, zoloft or any other kind. What I find that works for me personally is to force myself up and moving even if I dont want to. I exercise and sketch or read or do something that I would normally do. I have to admit that these things dont always help but, I am grateful for the times that they do. Good luck sweetie.

anti-depressants are good, but you can also be sure to take vitamins, such as B-6, omega-3 fatty acids, and a good multivitamin. exercise will help as well as getting some sunshine everyday. in the fall and winter months you can get depressed from the lack of sunlight, since you aren't getting as much vitamin D from the sun, so taking a supplement would help. make sure to get enough sleep. and try to keep yourself busy, instead of doing nothing, which will only give you plenty of time to sit and think and listen to negative messages.

Dig to the roots of your problems. What is it that you are depressed about? What can we do to make you not so depressed? You are loved very much by God and ofcourse your happiness is very important to him. Lets focus on whats positive in the world and in your life. Lets try not be so hard on ourselves. Lets try to laugh at ourselves and realize we are not supposed to be perfect. Lets not take the way we feel and the thoughts inside our head too serious. Master your brain. How about we start by changing our diets and exercise. The releasing of endorphines through physical activity is proven to make one happier. Lets try activities that stimulate the brain so we can have fun and smile. ; ) LOVE
