My girlfriend used to leave on the TV, and it proved a great distraction from the long day alone...
Ensure a few toys are available.
Make sure there is ample food / water.
Walk the dog before and as soon as you return from work, no matter how short - they will love you for it.

Do you have your dog in a crate while you are gone? When you put your dog in it's crate offer it a small treat for going in willingly. Make sure it has a blanket or towel to lie on and a toy and something to chew that is safe.
You can also cover the crate with a light blanket to filter out noise and give your dog a sense of safety.
Try to get your dog in its crate 15 minutes before you leave for work so it has time to settle in.
Also, when you come home, do not let your dog out immediately when it starts barking. Let it bark and tell it "no" and wait a couple minutes before responding. Hopefully it will learn that the barking isn't going to get you over to it right away. If it is good when you come home then go and get it sooner as a reward.
Since your dog is only 10 months old it may yet grow out of this habit. It's still a puppy so it may feel insecure or it may think if it puts up enough fussing you will come back.
Try the above tricks for a week or two, along with any other good ideas suggested here.
If your dog does not respond to those then you can try the next step and buy a special collar that will spray a little citronella when your dog barks or howls. It is harmless and will startle the dog enough to stop.
The last resort would be a collar that gives a static shock when the dog barks, but I don't recommend starting with that. It should be a last ditch effort. I really think your dog can overcome it's noise making with some patience and positive reinforcement.
Feel free to contact an experienced trainer for advice, and talk to your vet as well. They are great sources of help and advice as they have seen so many dogs and behaviours and have probably heard from other owners what may have worked for them.
Good luck!

My dog has the same problem. I've calmed her down a bit by taking her for walks and letting her run free for a bit in the park. She's stopped barking at other dogs, and she only barks when you leave for work because she knows that she'll miss you!

Hi, you need to leave your dog for short periods of time and return so that he knows you'll be back, when you are leaving or returning don't make a fuss of your dog just walk in or out go about your business calmly, only interact with your dog when he is sitting quietly.
He needs a good walk every day keeping in mind he is only a baby and doesn't require a lengthy walk at this point, they need simulation mentally and physically so he needs fun things to do while you are away to keep him busy.
I freeze chicken necks and throw them out for my dog to keep her busy also I make a rice dish (brown rice) with vegies, garlic, fish oil and some meat to add flavour and freeze this in small portions (1 cup) in freezer bags. When frozen remove the portion and throw it out on the grass and your dog will spend some time eating it keeping him busy.
These methods worked for my shepherd and now she is great, she also loves her clam pool for hours of fun.
You can't have a dog chuck it in the backyard and expect it to behave, being a responsible owner you are rewarded with a well mannered pet and obedience class is the best place for all the family to be, you will love it and so will your dog and many of the problems you experience can be solved with the help of the trainers there. Good Luck

Get him a playmate? or a kong... My dog used to bark all the time but now when I have to leave I fill his kong up with peanut butter and canned food and it distracts him... and I guess he just naps when he's done with it... my neighbors say he's a lot quieter since I got him the Kong...

This is his way of letting you know he is not happy that you are leaving. Try crate training him and see if that will help. Also, long walks morning and evening will work off some of his energy.
Good luck.

leave a T.V. or radio on and when he starts crying, just keep walking. HE will stop when he hears that it is useless.

You can de-bark the dog. But i know you won't do it if you love your dog no matter how much he barks and howls.
