depends. Some people have some sort of aversion to the act of smoking (not necessarily the smoke) like it was some sort of Holocaust gas that causes death in 5 seconds.

If you date is one of those holier than thou types, it might be in poor form to mention that. But well if you do smoke, you can't hide that from betty home bakin' pristine, so you might aswell ask.

And then right there in that moment is a date maker or breaker. It may have been in poor form to ask the question, but if she answers like a ***** and you are a smoker, well problem solved. Don't Date Her Again! You were polite enough to ask ahead of time and didn't just whip it out like I would (I'm one of those inconsiderate smokers that knows I'm a smoker and tries my best not to hide that I smoke)

I'd say that if you're a smoker on a first date, then you probably don't know the other person well enough to be willing to change your habits, so go ahead and ask if the urge strikes...and if the person is so averse to smoking that they decide they don't want to date, you've saved yourself the trouble of getting deeper into a relationship only to find that you'll have major problems in the future over such trivial issues.

What if the person says" "I hate smokers!" Are you willing to try to stop smoking? If you are willing to be with a non-smoker and willing to not smoke when you are with her then ask her first what she thinks about smokers. If you are only looking for a smoker or a non-smoker that do not care you smoke then go ahead ask the question you have nothing to lose.

If the other person is a non-smoker then you get a tick in the box for having an anti-social habit. then you subject them to something unpleasant. At least on the first date, try not to smoke in their company. Get them to like you first.

If your date starts smoking, then go ahead.
If your date doesn't, and you have an urge to smoke, ask if your date smokes. If she says no, than don't. If she says yes, then ask if she would care to share one with you.

I don't smoke by the way.

Well I guess it depends on who you're talking to. If you're talking to some non-smoking fanactic then yes. My first date with my hubby he asked if I minded if he smoked (I am a non-smoker). I didn't care. It was polite of him to ask tho. And if your date freaks out on you for having a cig - there will prolly be probs with any relationship that may come out of it. She'll be constantly hounding you to quit, saying nasty things like.... you stink.... etc. :)
