I'd say ask her to a fast dance first. Don't worry about "marrying" her at the formal. If she really likes you, there are other times.
Just smile and ask her if she'd like to dance.
when that's over, play it by ear and assuming all goes o.k., a bit later ask her for a slow dance. If you are really uncomfortable, wait.
Go with the flow, since how she reacts. Is she staring in your eyes smiling alot or what? Be consious abut whether the timing is right for her too; e.g., is she embarassed because everyone you know is watching.
Afterwards? Eat together with her and her friend. If she's bringing a friend, you are not gonna have the chance to slip off with her after anyway.

ok... your problem is simple. Look at the big picture here... she is talking to you about the dance period, that's a good thing. As long as she isn't brushing you off about the dance then you have nothing to lose. Sounds like she's into you. You'll regret it if you don't ask her to dance one the 1st or second slow dance. That way while you're dancing you can ask if she'd like to have the next slow dance. Who knows you might end up dancing with her most of the night. You don't want to give the opportunity for some other guy to snag her up. At the very worst you'd at least feel better knowing you asked and got turned down instead of not asking and never knowing if she would've. Go for it!

If there is one thing that alwayse seems to work its confidence. Dont be all tentative and stuff like that. Think inside your going to ask her to dance and shes going to say yes. after the dance maybe go get some food or something. get one of your friends to come along so her friend doesnt feel left out and you get to talk to your girl 1 on 1. Main thing is be CONFIDENT.

Just ask her to dance. Don't think to much about it. She either dances with you or not. Either way don't take it too seriously. Girls are hard to understand sometimes. When people like your girl are with their friends they don't always act the way they would if they were alone. What I am saying is don't read too much into it. Try to have fun. Help her to have fun. Guaranteed girls like guys they can have fun with.

My friends and I always tend to form circles at dances, so make sure you're both in the same circle, and when a good song comes on, say, "Do you want to dance?" It's that easy. After the song is over, you can say, "You're a good dancer." or "So, are you having a good time?" or "Aren't the decorations great?" or whatever feels right.
Good luck!
