There are too many idealistic answers in the answers listed.
If a man is married, he is to "cleave to his wife," which does not mean that he has to abandon his mother all total, but she is relegated to a secondary position.
I would say that if y our mother in law is demanding time on the part of her son and taking her son away from his wife, that the best thing to do is to move 500 miles away and get an unlisted telephone number.
And I return to a suggestion that I gave in another answer:
When a couple gets married, murdering the mothers should be a part of the wedding ceremony.

It depends on the definition you're undertaking. It also makes difference on who do you adress more and respect the more, of course.
One thing, for sure. Your mother gave you birth, and you know more your mother than you do your wife.
Another thing is, the source of where the idea originated. If you live in the same place with your mother and your wife at the same time, you're gonna have a very hard time trying to answer this question.

Do you mean your mother and your wife? I would say your wife because that is one relationship you have to work with the hardest and is definitley worth more in the long run. Your mother will always be there but she has feelings to. Your parents raised you and will always be there for you unless you messed it up and they disowned you. Your relationship priorities should be as follows: 1. God 2. Spouse 3. Children 4. Family

I think a Mother. If a mother isn't happy then neither is the house (cos it looks a mess) or the children and in turn the husband. So the mother for definate.

mother....
simply because a mother can be a wife
while a wife can't be a mother without a child
a wife becomes a mother only when she has a child
and a mother plays a vital role in a family...which is more com plex than a wife's role
a mother is a mother and a wife
a wife is just a wife

If you are married, then you are working on your family. If your mom is interfering in your relationship with your wife, then you need to tell your mom to butt out.
If her side of the family is causing problems, she needs to speak up. If your side is causing problems, then you have to speak up for her too. If that isn't done from the beginning, it can cause REAL problems. I've seen it a lot of times in my friends' lives. I've had friends who had in laws, who made me think I was lucky that my inlaws were gone before my husband and I even dated.
Moms can offer input, but a smart Mom will wait until advice is actually asked for before she starts putting down her son or daughter's spouse.

The natural order of things designed by God is Husband & Wife. Then being Mom and Dad to the children.
It is also part of God's plan for the couple to both take care of the children.
Hope this helps.

wife,,should be anyway,,mothers should raise their sons to be independant of them when they reach adulthood, men should be able to look after their wives as good husbands who discuss their lives between themselves.it isnt good to have a mother who needs to have a say in someone elses life, you never see anyone interfering in theirs,it would be unthinkable. i agree with ntm,,,, from some of these posts, there seems a lot of women who want to remain the most important people in their sons lives which i find quite odd actually as all i can think of is 'norman bates' syndrome,ah well.

Both are important but mother should always get first preference in some matters.
