Start up problem - The red light in the ignition stays on and does not recognise the key code..eventually after a dozen attempts it does start. Cannot fix problem myself because all keys have code.. anyone familiar with this problem? How much will it cost to fix and what is causing this?

You probably have two keys, try them both, I understand that the immobiliser forgets the code.

The curious thing is that after a number of tries that the carstarts and this suggests that it may be as simple as a new battery is needed and the warmth from your fingers is giving enough power to the battery to work the immobilser, try a new battery first.

If you say the car starts after a dozen attempts, I'm going to take an informed guess from that one bit of information. Most Clio immobiliser problems are of the "it starts or it just will not start at all" type.

I'm going to suggest yours is a roughly 94-97 model with a sunroof and the fault is with the receiver unit inside the roof. £60 odd. But there's no point in just changing bits at random. Get a Renault garage to check it out.

your key needs to be re-programmed by dealership mate.x
