a very common problem is the "Idle Air Control Valve" or the "EGR Valve"

try pulling them off and cleaning them with some throttle cleaner, you can pick up a can for a few bucks from any auto parts store...
if after you do that the car starts and runs easier then you know thats what the problem is... and if the problem persists the you may need to get new parts which sucks due to the price!!! search e-bay before buying anything from a parts store...

So after fifteen minutes it starts and runs ok? 15 minutes grinding on the starter on and off would drain the battery to less than 10.9 volts required to run the electronics? But if intermittent was how it used to start and now all it does is start and die. Z's sometime start and die like you describe because the wire in the airflow meter is broken. Take your time removing the air flow meter the rubber parts WD-40 or Silicone spray helps removing them. Three rubber parts from the throttle chamber to the AFM are no longer available.

I would agree with Adrian that the VG30DETT motor is the fastest stock motor for the 300ZX. But to correct something he said, nobody puts twin turbo 4 cylinders in any car, there are no twin turbo'd 4's. Only 6 cylinder and up. Anyways, Another great choice for a motor would be one of the RB series motors from a Nissan skyline. They have a n/a motor, a turbo'd motor and a twin turbo motor. These would make it possible for you to modify up to 1,000+ Horsepower with the right mods and enough money.
