Ok, so my brother just recently got his hair dyed black and now he wants to have red highlights put in it. What would be the best way to put red highlights in there and let be able to stand out? Would it be best to lighten the hairs that he wants to dye red, and then dye them red? He dosen't want them to turn orange. So any ideas on what would be the best solution?

oh my god!!! thats like the same exact think i did.. at first i just wanted all black hair.. it was dark dark dark black and i didnt like it at all.. so i tried to dye it back to brown.. but it did not change.. so yeah you have to bleach the parts you want red and then dye it red. i have my red highlights and i love them!! but i got it done at the salon.. i think that is the best way. cus alot can go wrong trying to do it yourself.. for example my hair.. i didnt know that black dye couldnt be dyed over ((DUH)) now i know!!! but yeah .. hope this helps!!

Just bleach the sections you want to go red and then either apply red dye to those areas only or you can apply red dye all over to give a hint/tinge of red on the black hair also. If you just want the bleached ares red then you can put vaseline or baby oil or foil on black parts of hair to stop them from getting red dye on them (takes a few washes to completely get vaseline etc out of hair again but its great for protecting areas you dont want dyed.
I'd say Special Effects Nuclear Red would be best as thats widely regarded as brightest and most neon red so would really stand out against the black.
You can see examples of Manic Panic and Special Effects reds in our gallery to help you make up your mind...

Ok I have done this on my hair many times and I love the way it turns out. Being that his hair is black, you will want to use either a 30 or 40 volume for it to lift. First what you want to do is bleach the strands he wants red, but only bleach them to where they turn an orange color. Not to worry, because you will be putting red color on top of it. After you get the orange color, wash and rinse and dry. Then apply the red on top of the bleached strands. When mixing the red, use 20 volume peroxide and you may need to leave it on for 20-25 mins. Then wash and rinse. Over time the color will fade but because you are bleaching your hair to an orange color, you wont have to worry about it fading to a pink. I am not sure what products you plan on using. Go to your local beauty supply to get the best brands.

Bleach the parts he wants red with a highlighting cap. That is the best way to get the red to stand out as well. You are going to have to use stong bleach to get it blonde. And I suggest not using manic panic. Atomic Punk Red works well and the red will be red.

well, imagine drawing a big smidge with a black crayon, now take another color and try to get it to stand out over the black... doesn't work! so bleach it, then take an herbal essence red and use that on his hair (it lasts the longest!) also, not they do make red kits especially for black dyed hair, so i would advise going to walmart and looking for which one they carry. do NOT get a kit from hot topic, or the punky ones they have in the stores. get an herbal essence, trust me on this one! i have black hair with red chunks in it! have fun!
