You left out one crucial bit of information: where are you flying from?
I'm afraid we have no idea what's close to you if we don't know where you are.
*************
From Heathrow, your closest international destinations are Ireland, Spain, France, and the Netherlands. All are quite safe.

Uhm, lets see- Agree Dublin is great - lots to see and very clean - and if you want a bit of night life then Temple Bar section is absolutely great - at night time its like a big Fiesta - fairly safe - lots of Guarda (police) around + the language is English. In continental Europe try Lisbon - Great food, people and historic sites to see + weather is not too bad - to give this city a real good tour you need at least 3 days and good walking boots - however to get the best out of it - you need to eat where the locals do and English is not always spoken but a few phrases from a phrase book goes a long way! For Africa, try South Africa BUT via a formal Tour Group - here they will guide you through all the sights and sounds safely - also there is different tours aimed at the Sproty person/ Historical Sites/ Tourist - Don't forget to try and get past Swaziland - Here life has stayed still for quite a while and you can get magnificent art from artists on the street! For the Americas try Canada or The Northwest of America - away form the popular destinations - you also have the benefit of being able to do a self drive. For South America - Argentina and Chile are possibily the two safest routes but again like Africa go via a guided tour. REMEMBER you are only as safe as you make yourself to be - if you go to Poorer reagions do not show obvious wealth - you will become a target - most crime is in the form of pick-pocketing so be very creative on how you carry valuables - also advise is that you carry just enough cash with you at all times the rest needs to be left in the Hotel safe room and signed for both by you and the hotel manager - this way the insurance will pay you back - as for Passports always make a copy and keep this copy on your person - if the worst happesn you can get hold of the nearest bristish high Commision and still come home. bon voyage!

Heathrow gives you heaps and heaps of choices, and really, really cheap too. Also consider Gatwick as an option.
At this time of year i'd be lookin' at Morocco or the Pyramids. It's still nice and warm and you can get some pretty good deals if you hunt around on the net for "Accom and Flight".

If you are an American asking this question, then the answer is CANADA :o)
There are many beautiful locations within Canada (Nova Scotia has incredible ocean kayaking and beautiful national parks), but a great winter destination is Banff, Alberta.
