well, it depends on ur skintone i guess and if ur looking for a dramatic look or subtle. If ur looking to make ur black look dimensional then yes, do dark blue highlights, it's crazy how good it looks, and it doesn't look punky. that would be best if you have an olive or blueish skin tone (native american, laocian, etc) also, and ashy or cooltoned blonds or browns look good too, but keep in mind that the new style is non-dramatic. if you have a warm skin tone (Freckles, or light eyes) then a nice auburn is gorgeous in black hair! absolutely gorgeous! under no circumstance do light blond in black hair, it's so hard to keep up, and way too dramatic!
have fun, just don't overprocess ur hair, u'll be sorry in the future!

It totally depends on you, your skin tone, sense of style, basically what it is you are trying to accomplish. The great thing with neutral black is it is just that, NEUTRAL color so yes even blond can work I mean we have all seen it and on some it looks great on others it doesn't. I believe the key ingredient to highlighting is not just the color combination but the method to which the highlights are accomplished. In this regard sometimes it is worth the extra money to have a professional do it for you and once you find a stylist you like you and the stylist can contemplate highlighting options together. In fact, the stylist should have books of actual sample highlights you can physically place against your hair and see how it looks!

I lke black hair with gold or auburn highlights. especially ones that sparkle when the light hits them. silver ones are nice too if you are a bit older/mature.

I like black hair with fierce red highlights. Especially if you only do the strands that frame your face. :)

Highlights are blond. Lowlights are red or brown.
Lowlights would be most flattering with black hair. Not to mention it's not very 'in' to have extreme contrasting highlights like chunky blond on black. If you see a good colourist, they'll know best. Find someone you can trust.
