Depends on how much you like to spend. The top favorites for my guests are vodka, whiskey, rum, and tequilla in that order.

Vodka usually goes with cranberry, or orange juice, or Red Bull. (I actually like to use Monster instead of Red Bull, it's cheaper, larger, and a bit sweeter). My favorite vodka is Belvedere, also Grey Goose and Ketel One. These are good for shots, or strong drinks, but cost 20-25/bottle. Then you have Skyy and Absolut, a bit cheaper but still VERY nice. Then you have Stoli, still good, and Smirnoff - fairly decent. Anything cheaper than that I don't touch.

Whiskey - Makers Mark, Souther Comfort, Wild Turkey, Seagrams Seven. Makers goes for shots. Wild Turkey or SoCo is good mixed with apple cider (not apple juice). You can also mix these with 7 Up. Seagrams Seven and 7 Up mix is called "seven seven".

Rum - you can get two types Coconut (like Malibu), and regular like Captain Morgan. Rum usually goes with Coke. Coconut rum with a third of 7 Up, a quarter glass of pineapple juice and a splash of grenadine for color makes a very good "girly" drink, called Malibu Rum Punch. You can't taste the alcolhol, so girls will love it.

Tequilla - Patron for shots, Cuervo for margaritas. I usually just buy a lime margarita mix, limes and margarita salt. Wet the rim of the glass and dip it in salt for people who want it. Put in a shot or two of tequilla, add margarita mix, squeeze a quarter lime in, stir and serve. Or you can blend that stuff.

So, if I was ready to throw $300-400 on alcohol (which I've done several times), I'd get all of the above.

For $100-150 budget, get a large size bottle of Skyy, Absolut or Stoli, cranberry juice, orange juice, a couple of energy drinks, SoCo, Captain Morgan, Coke, Cuervo, Lime margarita mix, limes, margarita salt, stirring straws.

For the absolute cheapest, get a large bottle of Stoli, cranberry and orange juice, Cuervo, lime margarita mix, limes, margarita salt. That'll run you about $70. I wouldn't get anything cheaper. If you can't afford the good stuff, don't buy anything and stick with beer, let your guests bring whatever they want.

I'll usually call my friends who I know are definitely coming and have them bring mixers or a bottle of cheaper alcohol, so I don't have to spend everything myself.

You may have some wine drinkers in the crowd. The beer keg equivalent for wine drinkers is boxed wine, and there actually is decent boxed wine available -- DON'T LAUGH, IT'S TRUE! The advantages are in economy, convenience to serve, and safety (no glass around all those drunks).

A rough rule of thumb is that the better boxed wines come in three liter boxes. You can get some ideas at http://boxedwinespot.blogspot.com

Some of the five liter boxes are better than others though. Almaden in particular is not bad. For goodness sake, stay away from any box with the words "table wine" or "natural flavors" on the box. What's inside is VILE.

Any ready made Sangria in a five liter box is a fine choice for a big party, generally a crowd pleaser, and no work required (slicing fruit, mixing, etc) on your part.

Offering your guests cocktails, in addition or beer (or wine) can be a fun and impressive way to entertain. Your liquor cabinet would be nicely stocked if you keep bourbon, gin, tequila, vermouth, vodka, and whiskey on hand.

If keeping a stocked liquor cabinet is too expensive or time consuming, you may consider offering just one universally loved cocktail, such as the margarita. I recommend margaritas because it's easy to make a very good margarita that is sure to impress your guests.

Never use a mixer. Take a pint glass filled with ice, pour 1.5 ounces of premium tequila, 1 ounce of triplesec (or mariner liqueur), and fill the rest with limeaid juice not from concentrate (I recommend Odwalla Limeaid). Do not use ever clear -- it doesn't add any taste and is easy to over serve.

Hope that give you some ideas.

Skip the liquor. Get wine and mix it with OJ. Or look up sangria on the web and make some .

Vodka is the most versatile of the spirits. It can be mixed with any type of juice or soft drink.

Ask your guests what they prefer. You might learn something about them.
