I had surgery (lancing and removal of tissue) and was hospitalized in quarantine supposedly because of a brown recluse bite. I have had reoccurring sores supposedly due to venom still in my system(?). Hospital did blood culture-no staph present. I live in CA where the brown recluse spider doesn't. All of this happened shortly after I helped my friend with moving from back east to CA. I heard one can have sores from diabetes.

The "rex" (as they are called) does live in parts of California. I was bit by one and had to have skin removed because it was necrotic. You can also have sores from sugar issues but these are usually on the legs and feet. If you have the means, try to contact a spider bite clinic or look online for places that deal specifically with spider and snake bites. These clinics usually have doctors that are trained in both specialties and they may be able to help you more than a regular ER doc. From what I read, the female is more potent than the male and can live longer under harsher conditions. If you still had venom in your system then I would be seeking help from a lawyer because if they treated you and misdiagnosed you - then gave you false information, they are liable.

Good luck! If you get a chance, let me know how this works out. I know how much a bite can hurt ...

I was bit by a brown recluse spider in California, so they certainly do live in CA. I had to take cortisone and steroids for 2 weeks. It burned and stung like hell and I watched my skin get eaten away for about 5 minutes. Disgusting. I have had no other or reoccuring problems as a result of this bit (except a small scar). I don't understand what the diabetes comment has to do with the spider issue. But yes, diabetes can cause problems with sores healing in a timely manner.

The average life span of a brown recluse is 1.5 years, so yes it could survive in the boxes provided their were items for them to feed upon. 80% of the time these spiders eat on other dead insects.

Yes, it could survive.I've heard similar stories regarding black widows, snakes and other creatures stowing away in packing boxes.Spiders can go a long time without food. You can get sores from diabetes, but I think the doctors would have checked you for that while in the hospital,or do you already have it?
