Dogs know the difference between kids and cats! It doesn't mean they have a taste for blood, but they sure can't be trusted around cats, as they perceive them as prey..
When I was a kid, we had a dog that tried to kill every cat but our own..he was fine with ours, but did kill a number of neighborhood strays..he sure was a good kid's dog, otherwise..
the breed that I have been breeding for the past 22 years is death on cats, unless they are taught to leave them alone. So far, I have been able to teach them all to leave cats alone, but if I didn't have cats, to raise them with, they wouldn't know any better..
It is an age old war...Haven't you heard the saying, "they fight like cats n dogs" ...Dogs and cats can be best of friends, but it doesn't come naturally..
there are many one-eyed dogs...sometimes the cat wins..
As far as not being safe with kids.. do you have any idea how many dogs are used for hunting? All terriers were bred as rodent eradication, and killed many a mouse and rat..Hounds have been used since the beginning of time to hunt....Dogs don't get a taste for blood, and turn into maneaters! Goodness! there would be no humans left! or hounds or bird dogs for hunting!

Do not be freaked out............ It is a normal thing for dogs to go after cats, rabbits, squirrels and etc. This is in their nature. This does not mean they will turn on kids or adults. I have dogs that are completely loving creatures, BUT.......... a couple will kill cats, just like some will kill chickens. It is in their instinct, BUT....... This does not mean they are blood thirsty.

You have a lot of good answers here .I have 2 female Pits that live with 3 cats ,and niether dog will bother any of my 3 cats that live in my home .If a stray comes onto my property , my dogs would see this cat as prey.I've seen Tigger kill many ground hogs over the years that she waits out until she's fast enough to catch them. Both of my dogs can tell the difference between prey and humans. They hang out with my nieghbors Boxer and his daughter when they come over and my hubbys friends kids.My dogs do what dogs do ,see small animals as prey. It's instinct.I try to do my best to not allow my dogs to hurt any stray cats .It's a constant battle.Your dogs just did what's instinct for them.

I have a chocolate lab that freaks out on cats if they come into the yard, but she kinda knows what cats belong hre because I have cats too.. one time she attack my baby kitten and almost killed her... I don't know if it was because she was new or what... my pit bull/akita mix has also freaked out on my cats a couple of times but with some firm disipline she knows better know... my shiba like baby kittens but know big cats.. don't really know why.... my chihuahua just barks at them because she knows that she is to small to do anything much.. my beagle/dauchson mix can not be trusted around cats and thinks that he is the alfa male and gets into it with my other dogs sometimes.. I think it has to do with the fact that some dogs are meant to hunt and felines are naturally going to get the bad end of the deal.. no your dogs are not cold blooded killers they are just dogs... I have noticed that if my dogs are let outside all at once (I have 5) they all try to gang up on the cats, but if they are be themselves they don't do it.. my lab has also tryed to attack my hampsters cage and gets pissed off at the goldfish if they look at her wrong.. It is normal just keep an eye on them and scold them if they even look at a cat with hate and they will learn... put a couple of pennies in a coffee can and when they start to go toward a cat shake the heck out of it.. that will scare them and they will not want to do anything to the cat..good luck
oh and all my dogs get along with kids great I have a three year old son, my 1 year old niece comes over and we have friends with kids and they never have bothered them but you always have to watch when children are around animals because animals are unpredictible..

Prey drive. One cannot improve on GetEmGang`s answer. The "taste of blood" thing is an old wives tale and I thought most people were past it.

I have a doberman and a pit bull mix. Both have been raised w/ cats in the house--they all love eachother, but sometimes stray cats come into our yard, and they act like crazy mad dogs. Neither one of my dogs would ever hurt myself, my kids or my cats, but they react agressively to other cats. Its in their nature. Dog eats cat, cat eats mice & birds. I wouldnt worry about it.

animal aggression and human aggression are two completely different types of behavior. Because they do one dose not mean they will do the other. Watch your kids around them, you should never leave small children around large dogs, they can hurt them by just playing because they are mush stronger

Your dog needs some serious training and a behaviorist. Also are they spayed and nuetered? (I'd hope so seeing they are siblings but just figured I'd ask anyways) Definently seek training for them, they cannot go around killing animals like that.

Try letting them out seperately, dogs usually hunt in packs.
Two yellow labs; one lived on the right of me, and one on the left. They were harmless by themselves but when they got together they were vicious, and killed a whole litter of cats. True story.

Never trust them again. I wouldnt leave kids alone with them. They might be lazy but if something catches their eye, they will be after it like wild fire.
