You may develop a tolerance for them and a 'normal' dosage won't work. You may develop a dependency on them. There are many health problems you could encounter such as liver damage. You know they aren't prescribed as a sleep aid don't you?

They could be doing internal damage depending on what pain medicine you are taking. Also if you take them too often for headaches you can get what is called rebound headaches. You should not be taking pain killers to help you sleep unless pain is what is keeping you from getting to sleep. If you just need help falling asleep try diphenhydramine or melatonin or valarian root. Warm milk will also help you fall asleep. Also if you have joint aches and pains why not try a pain relieving cream some of the time. Tylenol aka acetominophen can cause liver damage, aspirin, iburprofen and naproxen can cause stomach problems and anything stronger has to be prescribed by the doctor.

THIS IS A GOOD THING TO DISCUSS WITH YOUR DOC.. YOU MAY NEED TO GO THROUGH PAIN MANAGEMENT CLASSES. YES THESE DRUGS HAVE SIDE EFFECTS BUT FOR A PERSON IN CHRONIC PAIN THEY MAY NEED THESE MEDS TO GET THROUGH EVERY DAY LIFE. LONG TERM PAIN UN-TREATED TAKES A TOLE ON THE BODY TOO.
DOCS. USUALLY RUN BLOOD WORK TO CHECK YOUR LIVER AND KIDNEYS WHEN YOU ARE ON LONG TERM PAIN MEDS. IF THEY DO NOT THAN YOU NEED TO ASK THAT YOU GET REGULAR BLOOD WORK DONE

YOU SHOULD NOT USE PAIN MEDS TO PUT YOU TO SLEEP THERE ARE OTHER MEDS FOR THIS REASON.
GOOD LUCK!!

With everything that was already mentioned, too many pain killers in your system can also affect your blood count, especially your white cell count, it can lower it so that it is below normal.
