Bound's hubby here:
Unfortunately, you pose a very interesting and poignant question. I am a teacher so this is a very relevent question for me. I live in New Jersey where there is a very effective [firearms] permit system in place and there has been a school shooting scheme in our state. The permit system would not have stopped it because the teens were trying to buy illegal guns from black market gun dealers. So... these are not guns that would have been taken from mommie or daddy's gun cabinet.
As the school incidents have evolved this year so far, we've seen two developments. First, students are not the only threat when it comes to a potential school shooting. Second, those that have chosen to strike out at schools and their students have become more violent and more likely to make their threat a reality. As you project the evolution, one can envision that future school attackers may not solely rely on guns. Use your imagination, I'm not going to give anyone ideas.
What can be done to stop this threat? The current practice of stationing police officers or deputies full time in schools, has merit (unfrotunately). Will gun bans stop the threat... highly unlikely. Will waiting periods work... doubtful. Perhaps the solution to protecting our children in schools, lies with fortifying the schools. Perhaps, we will need to see teachers qualified and willing to carry. Not to supress the threat, but to protect the kids.

Well, the best way to do it since guns have been around like drugs for a long time and so will guns even if they are illegalized, is to build a time machine and go back to about 1945. Then somehow prevent the Jews from staying in America and gaining power (which is money), and somehow prevent the new media in the 70's on up from letting N-i-g-g-e-r-s make videos, movies, and commercials. You may even want to go back a little further, and somehow nix out Womens Suffrage. I think that led up to all of this in the chain of events.

Not gonna happen, everyone who wants to do something like this disregards the law.
If I taught older kids, I would insist on a carry permit so that when some kid starts going bonkers with a gun, you don't have to wait for the Police guns to be the ones to bring an end to the crises.
Kids who didn't know whether/how many of their school's staff were TRAINED and RESPONSIBLY armed would be far less likely to do this.

I would see it as a wasted effort. Guns are not the problem, its poor education coupled with even worse parenting. Children are very impressionable and need to have proper guidance in order to make intelligent and informed decisions. Teaching them the ramifications of taking a life would reduce the chance of them harming anyone with anything.

Gun control doesn't prevent crime. People killed before guns were invented. How will gun control change a person's character?

If adults keep their guns under lock and key, it could just about eliminate these incidences.
