The Type R is a better sub, hands down. I've seen, heard, and installed both and the Type R wins in my book. Its power ratings and capabilites are better, it's overall design is better, it's frequency response is better, it's just BETTER. When it comes to Alpine, their speakers and subs go as follows (from low end up) - Type E, then S, then R, then X If you have any questions feel free to email me. Hope this helps.

the type R for sure. My brother and i both have 12" R's and they are the most solid subs we've ever had. The type r is much more ruggedly designed with a heavy duty rubber surround that seriously lets the sub hit harder than the type s and mot other subs. it is awesome.

I have Type R 6.5 Components in my doors, Type R 6x9s in back, and a 12 Type R sub... I think you know now what I think...
Though I hear that Type S works for those with less$$
