I'm assuming you are referring to "pandora's box." Pandora's box is a reference to a greek myth concerning Pandora, who was given a box with explicit instructions not to open it. Of course she was overcome by curiousity and took a peek. hidden inside were all the evils and vices in the world, all of which came flying out and spread out, polluting what had otherwise been a world of innocence and purity.

The version I like, though, has pandora realizing her mistake and managing to slam the lid down, retaining just one thing inside to help; hope.

the myth is a lot like the biblical story of the garden of eden. Also, Pandora's box can be used as an expression similar in meaning to "opening up a can of worms." Like you might say "his mistake opened up a pandora's box of troubles for the company." or something like that.

hope this helps!

couldn't find Pendora's Box
did you mean Pandora's Box?
According to Edith Hamilton in Mythology the source of all misfortune was Pandora's curiosity. "The gods presented her with a box into which each had put something harmful, and forbade her ever to open it. Then they sent her to Epimetheus, who took her gladly although Prometheus had warned him never to accept anything from Zeus. He took her, and afterward when that dangerous thing, a woman, was his, he understood how good his brother's advice had been. For Pandora, like all women, was possessed of a lively curiosity. She had to know what was in the box. One day she lifted the lidand out flew plagues innumerable, sorrow and mischief for mankind. In terror Pandora clapped the lid down, but too late. One good thing, however, was thereHope. It was the only good the casket had held among the many evils, and it remains to this day mankind's sole comfort in misfortune."

Pandora was a girl in Greek Mythology, and was given a box by a god, and was told not to open it.

Eventually, however, she could not resist, and did open it. Inso doing, she released all the evils onto the world like greed, envy, hate, and related themes.

BUT, at the end of all these released evils, the box also unleashed HOPE, so it wasn't all bad.
