My dog seems to howl every 5 seconds. Even when he's inside just comin from outside and after a short nap. I kind of thought he might be in some kind of pain.

You'd know for sure if your dog was in pain... he would be acting strange/limping/yelping --- Dogs howl to find out where the rest of the 'pack' is. You are part of your dogs pack. If he's just coming into the house or just waking up, he needs to know where everyone is. It's like of like us coming home and yelling "I'm here! Where are you?" Avoid calling your dogs name and just make a little noise so he can find out where you are. If you call him it's like howling back to him. Making a noise lets him know where you are without re-enforcing the behavior. My guess is he's part hound... if this is the case then you may have a harder time breaking him of the habit. Hounds howl more than other breeds because they are closer to the pack mentality than other breeds. Hope this helps a little!
