I have a 1985 VW Vanagon. I have not driven it very often this year but lately when I am driving down the road and I let off the gas it backfires. What is the likely cause of this?

I was also thinking too rich. Too bad cars are not designed like aircraft where you can adjust the mixture from inside the vehicle!

Ok here is some things to think about
Old Gas
Timing off
Bad wires
Bad plugs
Crack in the dist cap
Bad points
Bad condenset
All these things can and do cause a backfire

could also have a bad diverter valve,running too rich,,exhaust valve sticking
