For various reasons, I suspect. Some howl to certain kinds of music. Others howl along with sirens on police cars or fire engines. Maybe some howl just because they're lonely or they're trying to find out what other dogs are in the neighborhood. It's hard to say. It probably depends on the dog.

They'll howl if something hurts their ears, or if they are trying to find other members of their pack although that is mostly reserved for Huskies. If you've ever heard a dog howl out of pure sadness and horror of losing a partner you'll never be able to forget it.... :'(

Its dog nature, probably has to do with communicating to their packs.
