>> Many people believe that dogs howl in response to fire-truck and police sirens because it hurts their ears. This is not so, the response is a throw-back to the wild instinctual behavior of howling in response to another dog's howl. Pack animals like wolves and dogs will howl in harmony as a form of staying in touch over distances and communicating between packs. You begin to "howl" and your packmate simply joins in.

>>Sometimes dogs will howl when they hear sirens or other loud higher pitched sounds like clarinets and flutes. These sounds may even come from a television set. Dogs do this as an instinctive response to hearing what they interpret to be another howl (dog in the distance). They are not doing this because it hurts their ears.http://www.pets.ca/pettips/tips-36.htm ♥

I suspect that a siren sounds a lot like a howl to a dog; I also think the harmonics in a siren probably bother dogs quite a lot, given the fact that they are generally intended to irritate the hearer and be noticed.

sirens are annoying to people and loud. We express our feelings about these 'annoying sirens' by talking.
Dogs ears are much more sensetive so its probably a lot more annoying and might even hurt some dogs ears. Also, dogs can't talk to express their feelings so the howl, bark, whine, whimper...etc.

P.s- and these .....'silly' people who say that the dogs think it's another dog-DONT BE DUMB-DOGS AREN"T STUPID!!! They know the difference between a siren and a dog you 'dopes'!
sorry....but thats just stupid.

A canine will bark or hoal whilst they pay attention sirens bc that's a severe pitched noise which in many circumstances canines dont like bc as all of us kno they have far extra effective listening to then a human they'd pay attention from as much as atleast 2miles away so plz dont be frieghnen and think of something is erroneous with ur canine it particularly is purely organic. All u can do is enable them to kno that they are ok reliable success

Don't you mean why? It's probably because they hear it and think that another dog is howling and their instincts kick in and they just decide to howl along to let the 'dog' know where they are...

It's irritating to their ears. Kind of the same way if someone was to scratch a chalk board would be to your ears. But much worse. A dogs sense of hearing is 100's times more sensitive than any humans. They can hear sounds that humans do not have the capability to hear.

I believe that the high frequencies that some sirens emit are more annoying to dogs ears. They try to tell anyone listening that something is either weird or bothering them...

Most dogs do. Their ears are super sensitive so when sirens pass they're ears hurt.

it could hurt their hears. the high pitched sirens can be more sensitive to a dog's hearing, so it could be so high as to hurt their ears
