Yes. Her hair dresser most likeley used a GHD hair straightener which is one of the best on the market, (stands for good hair day hahhaha) Some other good brands are 'the president' etc they cost about 300 dollars (Aussie dollars) however i must admit i use a remington one which cost me $30 and it does the same as the GHD.

Heres what you need to do
1. Buy a hair straightener (make sure the plates are not wide otherwise u cant curl
2. basically u turn it on, wait a few secs for it to heat up
3. get a couple centimetres worth of hair
4. then to curl, you get the straightener
5. Start from the top
6. and sorta wrap ur hair around it in a curling manner
its hard to explain and takes practice but its well worth it
7. Ask the hairdresser how to do it if you are stuck hehehe
goodluck

p.s i do this to my hair like everyday and it is still very thick.

Technology is so good these days u can buy gem stone and ceramic, ionic etc straughteners that will not damage your hair

Well I use a curling iron. What I do is to use hair spray on the hair section comb through it a couple times and then wrap around the iron and hold it for a bit. Then take the iron out and take a big long clip and make the curl stay holding it with the clip against the head in place and away from where you are working. Do it all over the head. Spray, comb, wrap on iron and the keep the curl clipped to the head. When done. Spray it again with hair spray all over with the hair still clipped on to the head when dry comb out. . When it looks good spray again in place. It it looks pretty good then the next day do it again without washing and it looks better the second day. The beauty contestants usually have hair a few days dirty to hold the style. If that doesn't work then maybe your hair is to long and thick to curl. Take small sections at a time so the curling iron doesn't get to full.
Girls used to take frozen orange juice cans (empty of course) and wrap their long hair on them.
To get the full look put your head upside down and spray it. and then quickly throw your head back and get it into the shape you want. And again respray to hold (hopefully that shape).

Sure a staightener and rollers will give you temporary curl, But; it can damage your hair. Also you will find that the hair feels unnatural to the touch once straightened.

Id go with a temporary solution of a curling iron and possibly some hair gel or spray. Wash and Condition first.

My hair is waist long and very thick and heavy. I have the same problem with curls. A stylist can get the curls to stay but that gets expensive. I've had luck with a spray made by L'Oreal (Pink pump bottle called Hot spring heat activated I think) and Velcro rollers, but humidity can still knock them out.

this is what you do:

option 1 natural air dry: when your hair is damp (preferably after shampooing) put your hair in some rollers(regular plastic or velcro not the heated ones). do not, absolutely do not touch your hair. let it dry. its best to do this at night so that the rollers stay in longer then your hair will be ready to wear in the morning. when you remove the rollers do not brush or comb your hair. toss it around a few times to style it.

option 2 natural air dry: when your hair is damp tie it in a twisted or kinda spiral tight bun at the base of your head. make sure it is snug and secure. this works best if you are on the go and will be out all day. during the day let your hair dry in the bun. when it is dry (night time) let it down. the results are soft sexy curls. don't brush are comb just toss hair around. do this if you are going to somewhere casual during the day then out later on at night.

HAVE YOU CONSIDERED LAYING YOUR HAIR JUST A BIT? HAIR THAT IS LONG AND STRAIGHT IS HEAVY AND THAT WEIGHS THE CURL DOWN. LAYERING IT WILL GIVE IT EXTRA VOLUME AND SHOULD HELP WITH YOUR PROBLEM
