There are no inconsistencies in Islam. You can get any Muslim to testify this. In order to enter heaven, you have to (verbally or at least in your heart) know that "There is no diety other than Allah and that Muhammad is a messenger of Allah." This is best verbally with 2 witnesses so that when you die, your body will be handled in a Muslim way.
No one on earth have the right to say other faith will go to hell, as that is with the will of God. But in a Muslim 'Code of Conduct' this (the testimony of faith) is what God told us. As for other religion Only God is the All-Knowing. No Muslim or Non-Muslim has a right to sentence you to heaven or hell. Same as Muslim, even a Muslim that continues to sin have no assurance that they will enter heaven before tasting hell. Only God knows.
As for the misinformation you received, please make sure you obtain your information from those who know Islam. I mean REALLY know Islam.
Thanks for your question.

There is no incosistency in Islam. You cannot go to heaven if you associate partners or woship other dieties other than Allah (God). People in the past who followed the prophets, Moses, & Jesus of course are considered by Muslim to be Muslim as they believed in One God & worshipped him alone. After Muhammad (PBUH) though other religions will not be accepted from them. I encourage anyone who has any questions about Islam to contact their nearest Islamic center. They can answer any questions you might have.

Allah is just the arabic name for calling God. Even Arab Christians and Arab Jews call God as Allah
Anyway, It is God that judges everyone and decides the eternal fate of every one because he is the only one who know the innermost thoughts of each person.

Through out the Quran, God says:That man will be judge how he lived his life and how his relantioship with God was.If someone does not about Islam then God will be mercifull. Besides no one on this earth knows what his/her fate will be after death.Anyone that claims this will be fooling themselves.
Only God knows!
Peace

That goes to any religion. The Christians have dozens of different rhetorics on how to enter heaven, why should Islam be any different?

There is no consistency in any religion.
Some christians believe every word in the bile is true and literal.
Some believe it is mostly metaphorical.
The only consistency to me is that it is ALL rubbish
