sense is that most families are a source of stress, burdens, demands, and more often then not, rob people of their freedom to be authentically who they are via judgement, etc. so why would that be a good thing?

Well actually you raise a very good question. I read this interesting book about Human Psychology and I have to say that it changed my perception of the way people are. It is true that sometimes families can rob us from being who we want to be but the fact is that every person seems to have their own theory that they do certain things in a certain unique way that is better than what others do.
It's part of human nature to build habits based on daily experiences and whether or not it is truly the best solution, the person feels secure doing what they think to know as best. For example you might clean a mirror using windex and newspaper or on the other hand you may swear by using coffee filters and some other brand of cleaner but it doesn't exactly mean that doing a or b is more accurate because in the end, the window is just as clean. So the point that I am trying to make is simply that we are most healthy whenever we are among family because even though we agree or disagree, we have a common bond that makes us live a certain way and always ties us together -oddly enough even when we can be exact opposites. Also it is our human nature to be happiest in social settings whether negative or positive. Families remind of us of how we came to be who we are. I came from an abusive family environment where my mother was/is/always will be the abuser and trouble maker that only wants people around her to beat up on. But this taught me a very unique pattern of how I can overcome controlling characters that have tried throughout my life to rob me of me being me. In short, my mother is still in the same place as she always has been but as an adult I no longer allow her behavior to handicap me. It's a part of nature and family for people to sometimes be dysfuntional because logically speaking there are so many different personalities under one roof. That's what makes life colorful and that's what teaches us to be who we are as grown ups.

I think that with a family, you always have someone. The family is the first people you ever meet after you are born, and the first people you know in life. Like it or not, you learn all your earliest knowledge and ways of interacting with the world from them.

If the family is relatively healthy, it makes sense that people would be healthier there. But family is always "home" whether healthy or otherwise.

I didn't hear of this statistic; however, I did read of people living longer if they marry instead of remaining single.

Keep in mind that statistics don't hold true for every person. They are just numbers.

In general this is true some familys are not healthy. remember that people has issues without having family too. family gives us a relatively safe place to grow and explore live and social interactions, they also teach us boundaries ie rule which we don't like but learning them in family is better that learning them without. yep family is (with a few exceptions a much healthier pschological envioronment to grown and live in

because people thrive from relationships with others. they seek human companionship and love. family is supposed to be that and people taking care of each other. unfortunately society has deeply disrupted the norm for families. now everybody is disfunctional!
