How do I block, parry, and strike with a chinese Jian or straight sword. Also, what are the principles behind using this weapon? I am looking to create my own form.

if you are looking to learn to use the weapon you must understand how to properly use it.

forms don't teach you to use this.

I would suggest finding a school (if you are near or in nyc you may email me) that teaches sword from a combatative sense and not an "ole" dancer sense (forms).

The vast majority of tai chi chuan and wushu schools and teacers teach chinese jian in this manner.

Weapons sparring is actually safer than unarmed because there is no question of "force" or would that kick or strike really have stopped you. Its a freaking weapon with a blade, of course it would have, so people respect it and protective gear doesn't become a hinderance to realism.

even if you are looking to create a form (I'm guessing you mean a pre set pattern of fighing moves used against inanimate objects or pretend opponents, IE: Martial Tango) you need to understand the realistic motions and learn to move with your sword.

If by "form" you mean your own school of fighting then that is very ignorant and egotistical to think that with a few sword movements you can re-create a system of fighting without pressure testing it against resisting opponents. Go find a teacher, find another teacher, find another, then maybe blend styles or take what you like or don't like and mix + match.

its all in the wrist-( IT IS ALL IN THE WRIST)

its something you can only develop with time and something you can only learn properly from a master

only the last few inches of the blade actually attack
and they do not cut or slice -(except in a few rare cases)
but rather whip inside the body of your opponent
they always attack the organs of joints or other vulnerable points

when you block with one of these swords there is no direct striking block
instead you seek to control and contact your opponents weapon, position and weight as well as their position and weight

like wing chun sticking hands, or tai chi chuan push hands

you may like this movie-(the sword work starts about half way through at the end) http://video.google.com.au/videoplay?docid=8162222609571015204&q=cheng+man+ching

this guy used to hit coins thrown up in the air, cutting a hole in them with the tip of his sword
he was considered a good proponent of chinese straight sword

in tai chi chaun they have a saying
the broad sword can be mastered in five years
the spear can be mastered in eight years
and the straightsword can be mastered in twenty years

on the other hand, you could spend twenty years and get nowhere without skilled partners for sparring and a teacher who has already mastered the weapon

It should be used to fight people. If you're cutting or stabbing into someone, you're probably using it right.
