All new dogs or puppies should see the vet upon taking them home so that you will know that you have gotten a well animal.
It will be at that time you will be given the shot protocol.
There is also the need to check the puppy for worms as a wormy pregnant dog can pass worms onto her unborn puppies.
Puppies grow their puppy teeth upon being weaned. At about 5-6 months they will start to lose those puppy teeth which will be replaced with adult teeth.
Find a dry dog food they like and stick to it as canned dog food seems too rich for them and will cause diarrhea.(If the puppy has problems with breaking up the dry dog food when trying to eat it,find a smaller chunk dog food and graduate to the larger as the dog gets bigger and older. Sometimes a small amount of milk on dog food will help soften it enough for the puppy yet keep down diarrhea.)
When training the puppy besure to be consistent in your command words and training.(Praise and reward good behavior and find an acceptable way to deal with poor obiedience.)
If possible take the puppy to Obiedience Class and if that is not possible be sure to atleast leash train your puppy.
Sometimes a small alarm clock in it's bed will help with the night time crying. A warm water bottle helps too.
Be sure to have your animal spayed or neutered.
Females will usually go into their first heat or breeding period at the 6months of age stage. . .some people like to wait til the first heat before spaying but your vet will let you know when you need to have this done.
Males usually dont mature enough til about 6months to start thinking about breeding but there again you need to speak with your vet on when to have him neutered.
I hope that I have helped with some of the things that others might otherwise forget.

Normally, a responsible pet owner will make sure the puppies are old enough to adopt out and will have had the first and possibly their second set of shots but people don't always do this. Ask the person you will be getting the puppy from to give you a written statement of where and what your puppy has received if they say they have had shots. Take this to your Vet and see where to go from there.
If you get your dog at a shelter or a rescue organization, they usually have a list of Vets where you can get your first Vet visit and general health exam free. Shots do cost extra.
GL with your new puppy. Also, don't carry your puppy around with you in pet stores, public places frequented by other dogs until the first sets of shots are completed. Ask your Vet for a recommendation on this.

Congratulations. Just know that it's a big responsibility. Your new puppy will chew stuff and mess on the carpet and stuff. I suggest taking him to the vet right after you get him. Your vet will let you know what he needs in terms of shots. Actually, the person you get the dog from should tell you what shots he has had already. It still won't hurt to get into the vet though to start up a record and get a quick check-up to make sure things are okay. Good Luck and lots of patience! :)

You should take the puppy to a vet as soon as you get him and follow the vet's advice regardring when to return. Take any paperwork the breeder gives you to the vet for review. Even if the breeder claims to have given the puppy it's first shots, the vet will probably want to give them again if the breeder does not provide you with records from another vet. Some breeders give the first vaccinations themselves, but often not correctly.

I would take the puppy to the vet in the first 24 or 48 hrs after buying. The breeder or person you're buying from should tell you what shots the puppy has had, if any, and he should have had some, and about his worming etc. Your vet can take it from there.
Good Luck with you new puppy!

You should not buy a puppy until it is weaned, and by then the breeder should have had the first shots. Call the breeder, and verify it with the vet she said she took them to to see that they have indeed had their first shots. Your vet will inform you of what shots are needed after the first ones, and how often...

Right away, he needs shots to protect him from potential illnesses before he can play with other dogs...
Get yourself the new pads for puppy training, and get some bitter apple to prevent him from chewing things up. Get some safe dog toys. Get a puppy door for your kitchen when you can't be right there. Don't want pee on the couch or puppy falling down stairs trying to follow you. Think always about safety, as you would if a baby was crawling on the floor.
Read a book on training puppies or hire a trainer, especially if your dog's tail curls upward ( denotes an aggressive dog ) Just means you'll need to work at training the dog, so he/she does not train you!
Good luck and blessings,
Rani

Well, I think it is good practice that when you first get a dog, any dog ESPECIALLY a puppy, from anywhere, to chose yourself a vet and have them give them a good exam. Other than that the only shot that you need before 6 months of age is distemper. The breeder should have given them atleast the first series of distemper and they will tell you when they are do for the next....usually.

yes, all dogs needs shots. rabie shots are taken once a year. look at your local vet for other information. if it is female, you might want to get her spaded, ;-). other things to help you at your first time could be trying out different foods. Get pads, plentiful water, and try not keeping her/him outside. hope it helps

you need to find out if they had shots or any thing before you take them to the vet, some times if you buy a regerstered dog, you have some thing like 72 hours to take them to the vet, if you have never had a dog before buy a dog training book, and work with the dog, take him for walks, and how to fetch, any thing to get his energy out of his system, wish I was young enough to have roller blades I woud take my dog on them to where her out
good luck on the pup, just find out about the shots before you get the dog, cause most of them already have them
