can we put bleeder resistor in ground path to avoid instability of battery charger in no load condition?

I have 12V@5A battery charger,i kept bleeder resistor (preloador minimum load) in output to avoid instability,when battey is not connected .this results battery discharging.so i need any other method to stablise out put with out bleeder resistor.and i also want one thing that we want to put that bleeder resistor in ground path who to connect it in ckt.kindly post any other methods to avoid instability in battery charger output.

Place a diode on the battery side of the resistor (in series with the battery wire), This will prevent the battery discharging when the charger is off
