When Should I Call My Child's Doctor?

The exact temperature that should trigger a call to the doctor depends on the age of the child, the illness, and whether the child has other symptoms with the fever.

Call your child's doctor if you have an:

* infant younger than 3 months with a temperature of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius)
* older child with a temperature of higher than 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius)

If an older child has a fever of less than 104 degrees, call the doctor if the child also:

* refuses fluids or seems too ill to drink adequately
* has persistent diarrhea or repeated vomiting
* has any signs of dehydration
* has a specific complaint (i.e., sore throat or earache)
* still has a fever after 24 hours in a child younger than 2 years or 72 hours in a child 2 years or older
* has recurrent fevers, even if they only last a few hours each night

Seek emergency care if your child shows any of the following signs along with a fever:

* inconsolable crying for several hours
* extreme irritability
* lethargy and difficulty waking
* rash or purple spots that look like bruises on the skin (that were not there before the child got sick)
* blue lips, tongue, and nails
* infant's soft spot on the head seems to be bulging outward
* stiff neck
* severe headache
* limpness and refusal to move
* difficulty breathing that doesn't get better when the nose is cleared
* leaning forward and drooling
* seizure

Also, check with your child's doctor for his or her specific guidelines on when to call about a fever.

Well it certainly seems that most people are saying yes. But I am saying no for numerous reasons. First in a 2 yr old this is not a dangerously high temp. It does need to be treated though so it doesn't go higher. First give her a does of Tylenol as directed on the bottle of drops or liquid. Either of these can be used in a 2 yr old. Second undress or unwrap her. Most of the time if the temp is this high they complain of feeling cold, this is because the air temp is so much lower that their skin temp. Lightweight pjs and a sheet or recieving blanket should be enough. If she starts to shiver cover her with another blanket until shivering stops then take extra off again. In 2 hours if temp is still above 101 give a dose of childrens Motrin as directed on bottle. You can continue to alternate these 2 medications for better coverage.
WHATEVER YOU DO DO NOT PUT HER IN A TUB OF COLD WATER AND/OR ICE.Not only can this cause shock it is also going to upset the child greatly. You can put in a tub of water at about normal skin temp. This will be cool enough to help bring temp down and as it cools it will come down farther. Remember you do not want the child to shiver, this will bring the temp right back up. That is the purpose of shivering, to make you warmer.
Depending on what other symptoms your child has will determine if she even needs to go to the doctor tomorrow. If it is a virus there is nothing the doctor can give to make it better. You do need to see the doctor ASAP if the child is not drinking, not urinating or not crying tears. Children can dehydrate quickly so small amounts of whatever liquid they will drink at least every 30 minutes or so. This is because they probably won;'t feel like drinking a whole glass or bottle at one time.
Finally IF YOUR CHILD HAS A SEIZURE DO NOT PUT IN COLD WATER. Turn the child on their side so they don't choke if they vomit and make sure they aren't going to bang into anything and get hurt. Febrile seizures are caused when the body temp goes up very quickly from normal and they are not dangerous by themselves. But you do have to protect them from choking and injuries. Hope this helps. Good Luck!!!

Yes I would take her because a temp of 103 is high especially for a child. I hope everything turns out ok.

Tracy, call the Dr or the ER or your Advice Nurse, whatever insurance or service you have for advice. Watch her temp closely. If it goes over 104 take her to the ER. If she starts having seizures put her in the bathtub with cold water and ice and try to get her temp down. She will NOT like it, but if she goes over 103 to 104 she needs her body temp to come down as soon as possible.

Yes because at 104 they can start having seizures and alot more other health risks. Put wet wash rags on them and give them some motrin. Try to get the body temp down and take them to the doc

Call your doctor immediately. Cool her with cold compresses, give her Tylenol and Motrin. Rotate these everty two hours. Like 10:00 Tylenol, 12:00 Motrin. Cool her in a bath of cold water if necesary. She could have a febrile seizure if high fever not addressed. Call your doctor!!!!!!!

Give her Tyelenol and see how she does. Fever in a two year old is not cause for a hospital visit.
