It's most certainly Old Wives Tales. It's the kind of saying that gets passed down from one generation to another. Some are true and some are not. If in doubt, talk to a "wise" person.

History proves that the most important way of passing information or learned wisdom from one generation to the next was in the form of stories. In most civilizations this job was given to the woman of the group. The more aged the woman the more status she received for the accumulation of wisdom she possessed to be shared with the younger members of the group. It was easier to remember and easier for the listener to believe if the lesson was offered in the form of a story, fable, or tale with the lesson being the logical outcome . Hence the term " Old wives's Tale" though now it's meaning is; a story of questionable truth.

Old wives. It means a belief or practice that has been passed down from woman to woman which may be incorrect. Once upon a time wives (women) did not go to school. the only education they got was from each other. Some incorrect information did get passed along.
