The Fastest method is to use COLD WATER!
3 safe ways to thaw a turkey without growing bacteria:
- Thaw in the refrigerator. (This takes the most time.)
- Thaw in cold water. (This is a quicker & FASTEST method.)
- Thaw in a microwave. (This only works with small turkeys or turkey parts.)
As the turkey starts to thaw from the outside in, part of it will reach room temperature (60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit), and that is prime temperature for bacteria to thrive. You should keep the entire turkey at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or below to avoid bacteria.
If you use the cold water method, you should cook your turkey as soon as it is thawed.
Here are some rules of thumb for turkey roasting time at 325 degrees Fahrenheit:
Turkey weighing from:
8 to 10 pounds:
2 hours, 45 minutes to 3 hours, unstuffed.
3 hours to 3 hours, 30 minutes, stuffed.
12 to 14 pounds:
3 hours to 3 hours, 45 minutes, unstuffed.
3 hours, 30 minutes to 4 hours, stuffed.
14 to 18 pounds:
3 hours, 45 minutes to 4 hours, 15 minutes, unstuffed.
4 hours to 4 hours 15 minutes, stuffed.
18 to 20 pounds:
4 hours, 15 minutes to 4 hours, 30 minutes, unstuffed.
4 hours, 15 minutes to 4 hours, 45 minutes, stuffed.
20 to 24 pounds:
4 hours, 30 minutes to 5 hours, unstuffed.
4 hours, 45 minutes to 5 hours, 15 minutes, stuffed.
Here are a few tips on cooking your turkey. You should use a meat thermometer to determine when your turkey is done. The turkey is done when the thermometer registers 185 degrees Fahrenheit when you stick it in the inner thigh or in the thickest part of the turkey.

Never thaw a frozen turkey at room temperature!!
Thawing a turkey in the microwave is not recommended!
This is the best way!
Leave the turkey in its original bag, set it in a pan, and put it in the refrigerator.
It takes about 4 hours per pound -- two or three days for an average size turkey.
If you're in a hurry you can use this method.
Leave the turkey in its original bag, put it in the sink, and cover it completely with COLD water. Either leave the water running slowly or change it every half hour. This method takes about 30 minutes per pound, or 6-9 hours for an average size turkey.
Once thawed, the turkey must be used within seven days. Keep it cold in the refrigerator until ready to roast.

This may not be as fast as you would like it to be, but the safest way to thaw out any frozen meat is in the refrigerator, to avoid excess growth of bacteria (though if the inside of the turkey is hot enough, the heat will kill most bacteria).
