It is on the small side- just slightly below the 5th percentile, which means that 95% of five-year-olds weigh more. My 2-year-old weighs 32 lb. If your child has always been on the small side but is growing consistently and your pediatrician says it's okay that's probably fine. But if it's recently that your child has stopped growing then it could signal a problem. In any case if you are worried I would talk to your doctor.

My son, who will be 5 in Feb, is in the same position. He went in last week for his pre-school physical, which is required every year. He is 37.5 lbs & 43" tall. He was actually over his due date by a week and still weighed in at 8.5 lbs. In the summer, clothes aren't an issue, but in the winter, I have to buy him jeans at the beginning and about January because he is getting taller.
He eats like a horse, is EXTREMELY active and a very healthy little boy. His father is 6'1 and is very lean as well.
As long as he is eating right--fruits, veggies, not a lot of junk food, sugar--getting exercise and isn't a couch potato, I wouldn't worry.
My son doesn't get sick but for maybe once a year and is a very intelligent child.
There are so many different body types, so it all depends on his overall health.
I would ignore some of these answers and go with your gut. Us moms always know when there is something really wrong. Not only that, your Dr. would have voiced his concerns by now.
BTW, my daughter, who just turned a year, is 24 lbs and 31 1/2 " tall.

My son is 4 years old and he ways 30 pounds. He has maybe gained a pound in a year. He is also real short for his age. Everyone always comments about how small he is. The real truth here is that his dad is 5'4 and I am 5'3. The doctor said that he will probably get to be about 5'7. He is proportioned well thought when it comes to weight-height. Have you talked to the peditrician about it? If he says there is no concern then just let it be.

considering that my 2 year old is 34 pounds and my 11 month old is 23 pounds, that does sound small. however if you are concerned, talk to your dr. all people have different body builds and height. whats normal for one may not always be normal for another. also compare this to how much your child weighed when they were born. has there been a significant growth? was the child a premie or underweight when born? if so take that into consideration

You need to see the DR. They told me my newly 6 year old was small at 50 pounds. Some children are more petite but you should have a 5 y.o. check up & discuss this with them.

That depends on how tall they are. If their height matches their weight they just may be small. All of my children are a bit on the short side because both dad and I are short, but I have one that is very little. She falls below the negative 5% on the doctors charts. But she is even on both height and weight for her size. Ask the doctor if the weight matches the height. :)
