My daughter wants to sell our kittens because she thinks people might take better care of them and to make money. I want to simply givethem away to loving homes. What do people think?

How can you be sure the homes are "loving". If you are giving these kittens to people you know would be responsible pet owners, then, by all means, give them a good home.

In the case of strangers, keep in mind that most folks don't value what they get for free. If they can't afford the price of a kitten, what about shots, worming and spaying, etc.

Even breeders don't make much money selling kittens. I think most put more money into the cats than they ever get out of them.

I would get a refundable deposit in the amount to spay or neuter a kitten in your area. Then you would know people had good intentions about taking care of the kittens financially. You can give the money back when they bring you papers showing the kitten has been "fixed".

Of course you are setting a poor example if you don't get the mother cat spayed as soon as you can.

I have 2 cats and a kitten all from shelters. Each shelter had an adoption fee and I still had the costs of vaccinations and spaying. If you have gotten any vaccinations done you should at least cover that cost. As far as selling them, if the shelters can get money for kittens then I do not see why you can't try.

only 20% of "free to good home" pets actually find good homes.. and typically most of those are dogs..

free kittens often = free snake food

they can be sold to research labs (legally)

they are used for bait to teach (illegal) fighting dogs how to kill

if lost they are not looked for, its easier and cheaper to get another free one

very few are taken to the vet.. if somebody was interested in taking a pet to the vet a "free" pet wouldnt be the one they were getting.. they would adopt from the local SPCA because its cheaper to adopt one already vaccinated, dewormed, and vet checked than to get a free one and have it fixed up

very few are spayed or neutered - again contributing to the unwanted pet overpopulation and putting their own health at risk

its a proven fact that most serial killers (including Ted Bundy) started out by practicing on "free to good home" pets

** the scummy people who take the free kittens look very professional, they will bring their kids.. you wont have a clue they really just want free snake food **

selling them will be difficult UNLESS they have value added, like vet check, vaccinations etc.. and even then people can adopt from a shelter for less... I would recommend taking them to a shelter where they can screen potential new owners before adopting them out

if you have the money you can increase the kittens chances by getting them vaccinated in advance - so now if the SPCA doesnt have to incur the expense the kittens are more likely to go into the adoption room... also remember the staff there REALLY loves animals, unlike pet stores who exploit them for profit

ASAP get momma cat spayed so she isnt part of the problem again...

Unless you have pure bed kittens there are too many kittens that need homes that are free. I think you just have to look at people carefully to determine if they will give your kittens good homes. If you try to sell them & people don't respond you might get stuck with a lot of cats because the older they get the harder it is to find homes. You know the "Cute Factor"

If they will be better taken care of and loved in another home, then I say go for it. Just given to loving homes instead of being sold would probly be best, since Cats aren't expensive anyways. You'd probly get maybe $20,and that's not that big of a deal really is it? I had two cats of my own, that when my ex and i broke up and we lived in seperate places again, those cats were stuck in a basement in my ex's parents house. I pleaded with them to let me find loving homes for them (i would have taken em but my mother's allergic, ashma) and i did just that! And Kila, she was an almost $500 cat,a persian....and she was given away for free, Better that than to have her suffer in a basement in a house not bein taken care while we found someone to pay even over $100 for her.

I would give them away to loving homes. Unless the kittens are purebred and you have the papers proving this; how much money would be a fair price?

Does your daughter realize how many thousands of kittens are available for adoption in today's world? Shelters in my area are overloaded with unwanted puppies and kittens constantly. Please look for good and loving homes for them, and it will make you feel wonderful to make someone else's family happy with a kitten.

Please get the moma cat fixed so that she will not have another litter that you will have to find homes for. Cats live longer and healthier lives if they are fixed. Best of luck to all of you.

See if you can surrender them to a no kill shelter. From the way it sounds they'd be better off, at least theyd be fixed, vaccinated, and they'll make sure they go to good people. And get the mother spayed, there are way too many cats in this world as it is.

Maybe you can scrutinised the buyer with some questions on kitten rearing, before selling the kittens. in this way you can at least know if he/she is a cat lover.

Sell the kitty's if only for a few dollars. People will behave more responsibly towards an investment.
