... did someone say Nikon?? (That cue was either for me or for Dr. Sam ;-)
I agree with the dSLR recommendations. If you shoot action, you don't want to f*ck around with a digital point & shoot. The shutter lag is pretty decent in recent models but they all use an electronic viewfinder which has a 1/10th second delay before you even press the shutter button. They also top out at 3 FPS.
Entry level dSLR cameras, such as the Canon 350D (discontinued)/ 400D and the Nikon D50/ D70s (discontinued)/ D80 provide 3 FPS without lag. Prices range from $550 for the D50 to $1000 for the D80 (body only).
One step up, and you have models like the Canon 20D (discontinued)/ 30D and the Nikon D200 which sustain 5 frames per second for 20+ shots. Prices range from $950 for the 20D to $1500 for the D200.
Professional models such as the Canon 1D Mk2 N and the Nikon D2Xs will give you 8+ FPS for around $4500.
I personally use a D200, and yes, I can highly recommend it.
As Petra mentioned, if you have Canon EF / Nikon lenses, you can use them on any Canon / Nikon digital body. However, the models I mentioned will all 'magnify' your lenses by 1.6x (Canon) or 1.5x (Nikon), so you may end up needing a new wide angle. Other brands usually take old lenses too, but Pentax, Sony (Minolta mount), and Olympus don't have anything that tops 3 FPS.

For best high speed performance you really need a digital SLR and that will cost you almost (or more than) US$1000, plus extra for lenses. (Canon and Nikon are the top pick)
However, if you only want a compact, then many of the newset cameras available, offer a very good continous mode with hardly any lag...but certainly not as fast as a digital SLR.
For speedy performance, you also need to buy a fast SD/Compact Flash memory card (Sandisk Ultra II or Extreme III are excellent).
I'm not sure what make your film camera is...but don't forget that, if you already have Canon lenses, you might consider a Canon digital SLR, which will accept all EF lenses.
And if you have Nikon lenses, then you might be able to use most of them with a Nikon digital SLR.
My top pick of Canon would be...
EOS 400D (Rebel Xti) without kit lens
30D without kit lens
Nikon...not too sure, but do doubt there will be someone else who will advise you on that ;-)

Almost all of the DSLR doesn't have lag time after each shot. Cost are vary from six hundred to thousands of dollars. At the low end, you are looking for either the Canon 350D aka Rebel XT for about six hundred with the kit lens or the Nikon D50 with kit lens for about the same price.

compared to what others are putting forward, you're literally not speaking about "Shutter Lag." Shutter lag is the put off adventure in-between you really depressing the shutter button or perhaps as the digital camera honestly takes a image. it really is what shutter lag potential. and that i recognize you're literally not asking about that, yet I purely needed to make sparkling because in case you began searching up shutter lag cases of cameras, you'll observe that some cameras are decrease than .a million second in shutter lag yet takes 5 seconds in-between images. What you're pertaining to extremely has no universally time-honored time period, yet I listen it said as said as "time between images" plenty. Like others have reported, it does count number if you're utilizing the flash (in view that those have a tendency to sluggish cameras down) and the image high quality. commonly, digital SLR's are going to be your best wager for time between images. in truth, many digital SLR's are able to taking 3 or extra frames in step with second. that is even as memory card % concerns. yet, in the journey that your digital camera isn't a severe end digital SLR, it received't count number what % your memory card is because it may't write to the cardboard that quickly anyhow. Your everyday memory card speeds now decision from 40X and up. Even a Canon 10D won't be able to apply the speed of a 40X card. The digital camera purely won't be able to study and maximum heavily, write at a 40X %. So besides the undeniable fact that that is authentic that memory card % can count number, in case you do not have the severe end digital SLR's, you do not favor to spend the further funds to purchase a 150X % memory card reason it really is purely wasted funds. as far as naming a particular digital camera or kind, that is hit and bypass over. you purely ought to attempt out the cameras on the save and observe purely how lengthy each and each and every takes from shot to shot. besides the undeniable fact that, in case you purchase any digital SLR it really is accessible lately, you're virtually certain a % of three pictures in step with second or extra.
