Mary & Joseph were "betrothed". In the Jewish culture of that time a man & woman were promised to each other and then he set to make a home for them. Once the man had a home & funds for his bride he would go and get her and there would be a wedding feast and they would be married and could consumate their marriage.

Joseph, after being visited by an angel, took Mary as his wife but did NOT consumate the marriage until after Mary's time of uncleaness after childbirth was complete.

So Mary was a virgin when she gave birth to the Messiah. She also had at least 4 other children. (Would anyone REALLY consider perpetual virginity a blessing? Especially if you were Joseph? "Yea Joseph, as a reward for you believing the angel, marrying a woman pregnant not with your child, and raising that child you can NEVER has sex with your wife or be blessed with children of your own" Some blessing!)

Consimated? Yes, but maybe not consummated.

Ancient records indicate that Joseph had those children from a previous marriage. That gave Jesus half brothers, and half sisters, regardless of whether or not the marriage was consummated.

The point being, Mary was virgin; Joseph was not.

Of all the important concepts in the Christmas story, some small folks concentrate on small insignificant items.

According to the History of Joseph The Carpenter, which is a book in the Apocrypha of the New Testament,Joseph married the 12 year old Mary when he was 90 years old.
He had 4 sons and 2 daughters from his first marriage named Judas,Justus,James,Simon,Assia and Lydia.
Joseph died at the age of 111 and it states that Mary was still a virgin.
The person credited with telling this story is none other than Jesus himself.

The Bible tells us that Mary was betrothed to Joseph in the New Testament but the Old Testament makes no mention of a Joseph or a betrothal or a husband or a father for the child.

The New Testament accuses Mary of adultery and then the angel, who is actually Zeus the weather God of Greek pagan worship, tells Joseph that she is with child of the Holy Ghost, and then later on we are told that the Father, the other God of the Three, is the Father of the Son, so we dont know at what age Mary had sex outside of marriage, because the New Testament insists that Joseph found her with child and he wanted to put her away.

We dont know too, if the New Testament is suggesting that Mary was raped as a child by the other two Gods or by all Three since the Son was one of the Three and since he was before Abraham was.

How nasty is this Bible thing and this mystery thing?

Talk about Satanic Verses?

How much more Satanic can we get?

Remember "Begotten Son" implies the sex act and all.

"Marriage" in the biblical times was more complicated than it is now. The couple were "betrothed," which is stronger than our concept of engagement, and could only be broken with a formal divorce. Betrothal could last from childhood to the wedding, or it could be shorter.

The NT says that Joseph was commanded not to be afraid to take Mary as his wife, and YES she was a virgin, if you will accept the Bible for what it says about this.

Yes, the marriage was later consumated; yes, Joseph and Mary had sex after the birth of Jesus; infact there were half-brothers and sisters of Jesus mentioned in the Gospels.

According to Matthew Mary was pregnant when Joseph married her, having been told when they were just espoused, by an angel in a dream, that the child was of the Holy Ghost. "Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son:"

This section was added to Matthew in the middle ages, likewise was Mark altered.
The concept of the virgin birth was added to wow the audience.

For the best account of the birth of Jesus though, go to the KJV, Luke, chapter 2.1-14

The marriage was consummated 'after' the birth of Jesus Christ - how else could it have been a 'virgin' birth otherwise.
Mary and Joseph did indeed have more than one child together. If you study your bibles, you will see that that is true.
Somethings just need to be believed.. that's called faith, and I suppose in many ways, it can also be referred to as trust.

Yes, Mary did marry Joseph. According to the Bible, she was virgin when she conceived Christ by the Holy Spirit.

From there, religions differ. Catholics believe that she remained a virgin thereafter and she and Joseph did not consummate their marriage. Many other religions assume that since they were married, there would have been no reason for them to not be intimate with each other. The Bible blesses the marital bed, so it would have actually been "less Biblical" for them to not be sexually active together.

There is also some anecdotal evidence that Christ had a brother (and his name escapes me, but maybe it was Joseph also?)

Before Mary and Joseph were wed, Mary was a virgin. She conceived Jesus before they were married. So she was the virgin mother of God. After Mary and Joseph were wed, it is said that Mary had more children. So I would say that the marriage was consumated.
Hope that answers your question.

As the English Bibles say "they were betrothed".
It was more than "engaged".
A Jewish custom, they were considered as pledged to each other and was as binding as marriage; the only way out was "divorce".

But the marriage was not "consummated" immediately.

They were "pledged" to each other,
Then the groom goes back to his father's home, built a place for the two of them, then when the father says all is ready, then he comes back and claims his bride. Only then is the marriage consummated. Notice, though, that the Scripture says that Joseph did not "know" her until after the Nativity.
