There just not much you can do to make you faster one day in advanced. The only thing I could suggest is to take a day or two completely off before a hard run. Don’t over eat or over drink because 2/5 of a mile just isn’t going to tax your system enough to justify the additional weight that a carb load will give you. You really want to be well rested and that will help you the most.

Hope you did well!

Hey folks, we are talking 2/5ths of a mile right? She is going to be anaerobic the whole time and she won't even come close to depleting her glycogen stores!

If you want to "feel" like you have more energy have a half or full cup of coffee. It won't really help you at that distance but you'll feel faster:)

2/5 of a mile isn't that bad at all... so you'll need quick energy rather then long endurance. Try some protein about 2 hours before the run, a little bit of carbohydrates about 1 hour before, and an energy drink about 15 minutes before. That should get you all set.
btw, yes, more sleep then you get on average would be good. Maybe about 1 hour more.

Breakfast..eat some fruits and get lots of potasium, avoid cereals...the sugars will kill you and crash your body quicker.

Lunch...try a plain chicken breast..GRILLED!!!...pasta's and leafy vegetables, you could also try lean lunch meats..

Snacks..dry, unsalted trail mixes, or nuts (usually in the health section of your grocery stores)

Sleep..DONT FOCUS ON YOUR RUN!!!, put it out of your mind...if you still need help relaxing, there is a great amino acid called THEANINE..GNC sells it for around $20 a bottle, it'll put your mind at ease.

Morning of run eat a bananna, and maybe some oatmeal...get a good stretch before you leave your house, and then stretch again at your run.

After...although some may have mixed emotions about Vitamin "E", I take one-two capsules depending on the length of the run, and how my muscles feel, but it'll ease your muscles so you are waking up feeling like you got your a$$ whooped the next am.

Good Luck!

I just want to tell you ahead of time, 2/5 ain't so bad. I had to run 1 and a half miles. But, to answer your questions, i would suggest having a nice, healthy breakfast. (DO NOT skip breakfast.) I'm not sure about lunch, though. Sleep for about 9 hours, maybe 10. Get plently of rest and bring water. I've been through it LOTS of times. :)

Make sure you eat foods with lots of carbs in them. Stuff like spaghetti or macaroni and cheese 2 days before you run. If you need a quick energy boost, they make energy bars and even energy jelly-beans to eat about 30 minutes before your run. Bananas are also really good to eat before you have a race. How to get more sleep...? Go to bed earlier!!!!

1 eat an energy bar about 1/2 and hour before you race.
2 eat carbohydrates and proteins
3 get plenty of rest no matter how short the distance is
and
4 relax before your race, and keep very loose (stretch!!!)

Pastas are the best. My brother is the MA. world scholastic winner. He always had pasta for dinner and fruit for breakfast and then something easy to get down for lunch. No sugar, sugar gives you cramps. And when you have to run, it will be like nothing :)
