It's not the dogs but the owners. Unfortunately, the bigger more muscular dogs attract a lot of meathead idiots. :(

Lack of knowledge!!! OH, but you are wrong about them not mentioning Shepherds and Chows because in ILLINOIS they have been trying (for a couple of years) to categorize 10 breeds of dog as dangerous and the breeds were "Pit bull," Rottweiler, German Shepherd, Siberian Husky, Alaskan Malamute, Doberman Pinscher, Chow Chow, Great Dane, St. Bernard, Akita. Owners would be required to spay or neuter their dogs and abide by strict care conditions such as wearing a muzzle in public and in your own private yard, wearing an orange dog collar with the words dangerous dog.
People believe everything they hear and rather then make an informed decision and discuss things based on knowledge they chose to spread all the things they have heard. Ignorance begets ignorance and so as long as we live in a society that is too lazy to do some basic research this is how it will be. If severe penalties were imposed on the people who own dangerous animals I am very sure we would stop hearing about all the aggressive dogs we hear about now. Many people will not agree with me but statistically more people are bittten by small breed dogs than any other, the only reason we hear of the large breeds and not the small is that the large breeds cause fatalities.
Pit bulls and Rotties are used by gang members, drug dealers, and dog fighters and because of this they have quite a bad reputation. Any dog regardless of breed can become dangerous and this falls upon the owners who fail to train and control the breed the chose to own.
It is true they really keep the stories going when it is a pitbull. When the Pomeranian killed a baby (in California) they wrote about the story for a day or two and then the story disappeared, if that had been a pitbull the story would have been in the news for at least a week.

Because people belive what they hear on the news and read in the papers. Most of that stuff is printed or on air before all the information is out. I find it better go have good information to come back at people with when downing a Pit Bull. Hard facts, and they are out there. Do some research, write it down and carry it in you purse. That way when someone starts bashing Pits you can say "go to this web site and read this information, or here is this book with real good information in it about the breed" Good Luck from a Pit owner!

You have to blame the press partly. People are sight driven. If a pit bull is involved in any type of bite no matter how severe or minor they go find the meanest dog or picture and that is what they show. If any other breed of dog mauls a person you don't get all the drama you get with pit bull coverage.
So now people are panicked and the press just runs with those stories. Any other breeds the press is not interested at all. Never mind the Airedale that killed the baby and other horrible cases.

I was very afraid of pits growing up due to the fact that the only ones I ever incountered were raised to be fighters. My husband was raised w/ nothing but pits and made me get one when we got married. This so called viscious dog was the best dog I have ever had. He was so sweet, and great w/ my kids. I used to know someone who bred pits for fighting, and he would lock the dog in a dark shed for 3 days with no food or water, and obviously no socialization, then on the 3rd day he would take this dog straight from the shed into a fighting ring. Crap like that is what has dammaged their reputation. People who do this to those poor dogs should be punished , not the dog. The state I live in made a law last year to kill anything that resembles a pit bull. Its predjudism.

It is against the law to own a Pit Bull in my city.
My gangster neighbor used to have a Pit Bull. I couldn't stand the guy, and the feeling was mutual I am sure. He "accidently" let the dog out when I was going to my car. He said something to that dog in a deep voice, but was never sure what it was. That dog charged right at me.
Now this is a grandma that is writing this--but a grandma that trained Dobermans years ago. I showed no fear and did that baby talk thing to the dog and he just wagged his tail and let me pet him. After that, the Pit Bull would do anything to escape his yard and come see me--even tried to get in my car several times.
So how did this all end? The loser piece of cr@p gangster took the Pit to the country one day and shot him because he wasn't a mean enough dog.
So the moral of all of this--there are no bad dogs--just bad owners.

You hear so much about pits because the MEDIA likes to sensationalize this breed and then people start to talk about horror stories they have heard. The breed is not mean. People damage the breed by training them to be viscious because they are a strong breed but only one of many.
Pit Bulls used to be called "Nanny Dogs" because they were good with children and used to guard them. "Petey", the dog from "The Little Rascals" was a Pit Bull.
Most horror stories are connected to people who have trained dogs to be mean or they have otherwise neglected the dog by failing to socialize and contain them properly.
There are so many breeds that could be lethal if attacking a person. Most of the time this comes down to breeding for aggressive traits and people abusing animals.

Most people who are scared of dogs like Pit Bulls have never been around them and only hear the bad things being said about them. I have worked for a vet for 10 years and they are one of the best dogs you can work ... NEVER have recieved a bite from a pit bull but AKita tried to take my face off and Rotts are fear biters most of the time.

not everybody is saying all pits are mean, they are saying that the breed as a whole is dangerous because they are not trustworthy and have a hair-trigger temper, you never know what will set one off
there was an article about pits in the news the other day and it said people who own pits are more likely to have been in trouble with the law than owners of other breeds (have criminal background or felony charges)
it just goes along with a certain mind-set

People believe that pit bull breeds are mean/dangerous/whatever because the media in its quest for sensationalism has portrayed them that way. Then once they started getting that rep idiots started breeding dogs that need dirt naps to each other, while temperment isn't 100% hereditary, if you breed a poorly bred dog to another poorly bred dog...you are not going to get a quality animal. Pit bulls SHOULD be extremely human friendly, but as with most terrier breed may very well not get along with any other dogs or other small animals.

It's totally because of humans...i mean, the way a dog is raised for one thing, and it depends upon there past,if they were mistreated as a pup, then given to a nice family, that dog could be very sensitive and just snap like four years later if someone was so smack him on the but if he did something wrong. Any dog is like that tho, Pits and Rots are just seen that way becuz they are bigger dogs and a little meaner lookin when they growl,so they are forseen by people as good guard dogs and are trained to be aggressive by poeple. I mean,i'm sure someone woulnd't see a yorkshire terrier or any other little dog as a good guard dog! haha!
