How can I tell the difference between a guy who is just shy and one who is disinterested in my obviously interested attempts to chat with him?

It all depends....

If he's shy (around everyone) he won't be talking to anyone really when you see him, especially girls. He usually keeps to himself & doesn't talk much & maybe a bit insecure about himself.

If he's uninterested he'll be talking to other (attractive)girls & and be ignoring you. Also being chatty with other people and is able to laugh easy and be himself is a good clue.

But he might be interested, he could be just scared to talk to you. Just keep trying to talk to him and if he doesn't seem to conversate at all, don't push it.

Or you can try to sit on him.
It's pretty easy. Just sit on him(jokingly). If he's shy and and interested then he'll get all red and won't push you off. If he's not interested he'll push you off, and maybe be a tad a annoyed, and if he does push you, just laugh it off, so it's no harm done.

good luck :)

Although I'm female I can answer this question b/c guys tell me that I always come across as disinterested or shy.
Well its really hard to determine what people like us are really feeling since our emotions or thoughts don't show...but one way you can tell is how the person looks at you.
If the person is disinterested they will never notice you, you'll seem invisible, and you won't catch them glancing at you.
If they are always looking at you but don't speak they are most likely shy or just anti-social.
I know there have been guys I've really liked and they would also make obvious attempts to start conversations but I would totally blow them off....its just how shy ppl are.
But the only way to really tell is asking.
